I'm looking to improve one of my stronger decks and I was wondering if the was a better commander than Tariel, Reckoner of Souls for red white and black

I'm not a big EDH player, but your commander will depend on your strategy that you want to play. What is the strategy of your deck?

Kaalia of the Vast is the first card that comes to my mind. She is is expensive, but her effect is obviously very good. It would probably require you to change the focus of your deck if you make the switch.

Here are all of the RWB Commanders that I found on Gatherer

Kaalia of the Vast

Queen Marchesa

Zurgo Helmsmasher

Oros, the Avenger

Tariel, Reckoner of Souls

Hope this helps!

Would you say any of these cards are better than Tariel, Reckoner of Souls

Most people would say every one of these commanders are better than Tariel. Personally I like her a lot, and as it's already been said, it's going to depend on the shell. How does your deck usually play out?

first problem is that you are asking about something that is entirely opinion based. which of the R/W/B commanders I think is best is not going to be the same as someone else.

I recommend looking at stuff on this website: https://edhrec.com/commanders/rwb

Kaalia of the Vast- great tribal commander not to mention allows you to drop the biggest and meanest critters in the game. Biggest down side is the 2 toughness making her very easy to kill despite the flying.

Alesha, Who Smiles at Death- solid reanimator but you can only bring back one creature per turn without combat shenanigans and all the creatures you can bring back need to be small. really good if you want to run hate bears though.

Zurgo Helmsmasher- amazing voltron commander haste, indestructible, 3 turn clock. best addition is Whispersilk Cloak. 2 toughness is a bummer and indestructible only on your turn sucks but you cant have everything.

Tariel, Reckoner of Souls- for comparison purposes I'll mention my thoughts on this one. flying vigilance is always a nasty thing to have, this allows you to attack with little worry given the high toughness. not much power though. you can snatch creatures for free but the creature you get is pretty random.

Oros, the Avenger- 3 damage to each nonwhite for 3 mana is really nice but you need to hit a player and no one is going to let you do that if they have the option unless they are also running mostly white. sadly can only be done once per turn as well unless you do combat shenanigans.

Queen Marchesa- personal favorite. major downside i find is that it is difficult to decide how to build around her. I also feel she should have been either 1 less mana or 1 or 2 points higher toughness. controlling the monarchy can be difficult, sometimes it is good to let others have it other times you need it.

that is my opinion on those commanders i did not cover partner combinations but you can look through those on the website i gave you.

She's garbage, unless you build around her; The same could be said about every commander. If you're not going to build your deck to suit her, then don't waste your time switching to her.

I would say what you're asking is not a great question as it is both subjective and very much based on the deck you already play. Because she is seven mana and the ability is random, I would say no she isn't the strongest, although if you don't want to build any of the other generals I guess she would suffice. What was your previous commander?

Tariel is expensive, not big enough for combat (although her butt is huge) and her ability is not only random, but it also depends solely on your opponents.

That's not to say she can be a fun commander, but if we are talking competitiveness of a build you want none of that. You would need a build around ability, on a cheap legend that can be gamebreaking if tuned correctly (e.g. Alesha, Who Smiles at Death).

So to answer your question directly: in a vacuum, Tariel sucks :p

You could actually look into partner commanders to get some interesting themes!

I think in R/W/B you are going to have a hard time being competitive anyway. Alesha, Who Smiles at Death and Kaalia of the Vast are both popular pubstompers but they are pretty easy to disrupt since they rely heavily on the commander attacking. I like Tariel, Reckoner of Souls and Queen Marchesa personally for angel tribal, goodstuff and politics. The best part about a deck built around a mardu commander other than kaalia and alesha is that you are largely ignored so you get to play how you want to play and sneak in a few wins along the way.

How bout the combination of Vial Smasher the Fierce and Ravos, Soultender?

June 26, 2017 12:28 a.m.

Razulghul says... #14

I think it could work, though Vial Smasher the Fierce is better when built around and in duel commander where the random targeting doesn't get you too much aggro. Ravos, Soultender is good, definitely better in a deck fielding lots of creatures. For partners in these colors I personally like Tymna the Weaver and Bruse Tarl, Boorish Herder for an aggro build.
