Commander Deck Help forum

I am planning on trading for a foil Zurgo Helmsmasher tomorrow, among some other things, and I thought that it would be a great opportunity to make my first EDH deck! Only problem is, I have no idea what cards or even direction I should consider as I have never made an EDH deck.
Would really appreciate if I could get some help on this, and would prefer a more budget orientated version, but still throw the ideas out there
Yeah, I'm planning on making a deck where you just attack relentlessly and get in as much damage as possible, and perhaps even win off of commander damage
Also that card looks awesome, I'll try to trade for it

My link didn't show up for some reason...just look up the "Wade into Battle" 2015 precon. Pay close attention to some of the staple cards across nearly all EDH decks like: Sol Ring, Skullclamp, Lightning Greaves, Command Tower, etc.

Do you often play multiplayer games? If so, he's hilarious with Assault Suit.

Miist,
Welcome to EDH!
A few recommended resources (sorry for the spam if you're already familiar with these):
- The Pandora's Deckbox articles by Epochalyptik, for some really solid deck-building advice.
- M a g i c a l H a c k e r's backbone deck ("100% synergy and 0% versatility") for Zurgo: MagicalHacker - Zurgo Helmsmasher
- LuckboxMcGambleshack's Voltron deck: Zurgo Hatcrumpler
- jayprev's combo deck: Playing With Fire
- Sean's Tarkir theme build from episode 8 of The Commanders Brew Podcast (Tarkir Block - Zurgo Helmsmasher)
- The Voltron Zurgo mini-primer over at CommanderTheory.
- Also, if you've not familiar with EDHREC, it's a great way to see what other people are playing. Here's their Zurgo Helmsmasher page
- When it's time to fiddle with your manabase, nothing's better than manabasecrafter. Put in a minimum rating of 4-5 and whatever maximum price you can stand ... you'll find perfect cards you never even knew existed. Here's their Mardu page
Also, +1 on GearNoir's comment about picking up the Wade into Battle precon deck to start. The precons are just a great way to get into Commander. You get a playable manabase and a ton of Commander staples, plus by playing the different Commanders you can very quickly get a good feel for the direction you'll want to take your deck, plus you'll get to playtest the very different card interactions and politics of multiplayer without a big time/$/emotional investment.
Please let us know when you get a decklist pulled together!
And good luck (and good skill!) with the deck!

GearNoir,
In comment #1, did you mean to use Blade of Selves with Zurgo or with some other creature in the deck? The Blade can be really good for Commanders with ETB or LTB effects, but because the Legend rule kills all the token copies instantly, it won't do any good with Zurgo.

I didn't think of that but I didn't necessarily mean for it to be equipped to Zurgo himself. I was thinking that if the Wade precon is any indication, Miist will have some access to a bunch of big hitters this color combo so I don't think it would hurt.
And great find on the Manabase site, super useful!

GearNoir, clayperce, and ClockworkSwordfish, thank you guys so much for going so in depth, now I'm just going to sit down and read through it all! Thank you guys a bunch, and I'll get back to you guys if I come up with any ideas or start to get a deck together

I built Zurgo as "board wipe' tribal. I used him with a small chunk of stax cards while using every board wipe i could find in those colors...which means all of them.

I cant believe I am an example!:D
Rules to make a Zurgo Deck and win
1) Zurgo is a good source of damage, so use him
2) The earlier you can get him out the better!
3) Obliterate is your friend, and others that do the same thing. You may not have any lands but neither does anyone else. If you did it right, youre the only one with a creature, and while they are picking up the bits of the once grand army they had, you are free to beat them to a plup.
4) Boros Charm Dont leave home without it
Also I know this is almost a month late, sorry

Zurgo Helmsmasher
Seems a little rough as a commander to me since his abilities only really benefit himself and you have. to attack with him each turn if you don't want to see him destroyed on defense.
I have little experience with R/W/B but perhaps looking at the decklist for the 2015 EDH set will give you a good start. You'll definitely want Blade of Selves I'm thinking.
