The list is the cards I own. —May 18, 2015

So I have been low on funds recently and I had to use cards I already owned and this is what I came up with. I am going to work on acquiring better lands asap.

Hmmm I want to make suggestions but all of them are going to lean the deck to UR Delver (unless your ok with that) which this deck shell seems to fit the best. XP

Idk if Pyroclasm is right for this deck. Small creatures are easy to deal with for this deck, its the bigger ones that are a challenge.

Blizzicane - Yah I don't really want to go the delver route.. it's so darn mainstream.
pumpkinwavy - Tokens are a big thing where I am right now. That's the reason for the inclusion.

OK. But you still might want a side deck Roast for the hordes of five toughness dudes Siege Rhino, tasigur, anything else... And Pyroclasm is really good vs Lingering Souls, which is really important.

Ya I may side Roast. Still not sure.

Hi Nef, interesting deck.

Could you tell me a bit more about your experiences with Keranos? When I look at the deck I see Keranos, a 5 drop, in a 21 land deck with relatively few permanents.. so it seems like you wouldn't see him at all until turn 7-8+, and most likely just as an enchantment, by which point the Chimera might already be buff enough to be the wincon..? Or not really? If we're working with 21 land I'd be tempted to just cap the curve at 3 or 4 CMC and use 2-3x Riverfall Mimics to go more aggro. Would you elaborate on how frequently you end up playing Keranos, on what turn vs how many turns matches usually run, how often he's actually available as a creature, the difference he makes in matches etc etc? Whatever info you'd care to share is helpful as I'm looking at crafting a similar deck. Thank you!

@shelldell - Hello!
First things first; Keranos is amazing. With the amount of card draw we have with Serum Visions, Gitaxian Probe, and Remand I almost always get 5 lands turn 5. Remember that hybrid mana costs give two devotion. So Frostburn Weird gives 4. Clout of the Dominus gives two. 4+2=6 and then keranos gives two himself so right there he's a creature.
His impact on the game is huge. Providing either extra card draw (this also helps prevent getting a dead draw by letting us dig deeper if we get a land) or bolting every turn is insane. With the amount of control I can have he can often be the only thing on the field and wear down the opponent. Matches with this deck tend to go on for a long time. But they can be quick too. It all depends on the matchup. If they run very light control the game is pretty easy and we can get out an early Spellheart Chimera and beat their face in. If they run control we have to hold back until we know we can get out Spellheart Chimera with a Clout of the Dominus without any risks of counterspells or instant kill spells. With that being said, Keranos can be taken out and the deck could still work. He isn't essential but he makes the deck much better in my opinion.

Ah, fair point about the land draw. However, are you sure about the hybrid devotion?

Here is a judge blog from February 6th 2014 which very clearly walks through hybrid devotion, and if you follow the example there then Frostburn Weird gives 2, not 4, and Clout of the Dominus gives 1, not 2. Their hybrid costs are useful because they can counts towards either a Red, Blue, or Red & Blue devotion check, but it doesn't actually generate more devotion. Other discussions about this I've found have ended up at the same conclusion.

Can you link a more recent official ruling that supports the double dipping for devotion? Heh, I'd love for that to be accurate but I haven't found anything to support that.

With that in mind would you still leave him in? It sounds like yes?

(Frostburn Weird & Clout of the Dominus + Spellheart Chimera & Keranos, God of Storms all together would "creature-ify" Keranos, though!)

I see a lot of controversy about the hybrid mana rule. I'm just trying to find legit rulings xD It seems your source is the best. I will do some more researching.

shelldell you are correct about the devotion rulings. From Gatherer: Your devotion to two colors is equal to the number of mana symbols that are the first color, the second color, or both colors among the mana costs of permanents you control. Specifically, a hybrid mana symbol counts only once toward your devotion to its two colors. For example, if the only nonland permanents you control are Pharika, God of Affliction and Golgari Guildmage (whose mana cost is B/GB/G), your devotion to black and green is four.

So yeah that is as official as it gets as this ruling is straight from wizards. :3

Hmm interesting. Kinda ruins my plains for this deck..

Blizzicane says... #14

I was wondering why you were running Frostburn Weird in modern but I had no suggestions at the time because when I see Izzet all I can think of is Twin or Delver. XP

Yep... ugh gotta do something to this deck.. I may just scrap it or delete it.

Blizzicane says... #18

Yeah that's the one. You could save/hide it and reuse it for another deck seeing as there upvotes on it and upvotes help get the attention of users if you need feedback. :3

Nef says... #19

Yeah but that's just... cheating. People upvoted this deck for what it is now. It isn't fair to use them I feel.

Blizzicane says... #20

True, but even if you do remake this deck using the same colors its really not the same anymore either way. Moving on, without devotion and since your don't want to make delver or twin which are the aggro and combo decks of this color set. You could perhaps make something "new"/rarely attempted and make U/R control since your deck has some control elements already? Put in stuff like crypt command and other control staples like Snapcaster Mage while using Keranos, God of Storms as one of your wincons seeing as he did see play in U/W/R control decks back then when they were tier 1 and he doesn't need to be online to be useful. While adding in stuff in your sideboard for aggro such as Anger of the Gods and Pyroclasm. (I am just spit-balling ideas here). :3

I really appreciate your help Blizzicane... I think I need a break from MTG... Snappy and CMoney Command are so damn expensive..

April 6, 2015 9:16 p.m.

Blizzicane says... #22

Yeah they are.... which is why I tend to avoid blue altogether in modern (outside of Merfolk and U Tron). :3

April 6, 2015 9:20 p.m.

Nef says... #23

Maybe I will stick with Shh I'm Meditating.. I refuse to play meta. I simply refuse. I also refuse to pay a lot for my decks. I wish I didn't burn features on this deck q.q

April 6, 2015 9:21 p.m.

Blizzicane says... #24

I merely play what is fun for me whether it be meta or not but apparently the decks I like most are tier 2 decks or fringe decks like U Tron, Merfolk, Goblins, Modern Death & Taxes, Mono Green Stompy, Living End, etc, tribal decks. None of the tier 1 decks interest me so I don't have to spend tons of money woot! :3 (though the only one that did was pod but that is gone now Q_Q).

April 6, 2015 9:28 p.m.

Nef says... #25

Good riddance to pod ;) The deck I'm working on now is like tier 10 lol
