Myriad - will this work (Could be epic)
Asked by Jastorm 8 years ago
Question, not sure on the ruling for this one. I have a creature with Myriad (say Broodbirth Viper) If I cast Triumph of the Hordes and then attack with Broodbirth Viper would all the tokens from myriad also get the boost from Triumph (+1/+1 with trample and infect)?
Rather than Broodbirth Viper, how about using Hydra Omnivore with Blade of Selves equipped. A 9/9 trample infect that hits everybody is fairly likely to wipe everybody out in the same attack.

Yes it would work. When you cast Triumph of the Hordes it creates a mini anthem effect until the end of turn. Creatures that would enter the battlefield after casting any such mini anthem effect like Triumph of the Hordes will also get it. The same kind of thing happens to a Mutilate type spell if you cast Mutilate with 5 swamps under your control and and it kills everything then you cast another creature spell with toughness 5 it would die.
The spells don't target creatures and says til the end of turn

griffstick, if that is meant to be a troll answer, good job.
If not (and just in case anyone else reads that), what you said is exactly the opposite of the truth.

I am being serious. I don't see how it wouldn't work. If I had a Spear of Heliod in play that says, "creatures you control get +1/+1" then how come a sorcery spell that basically says the same thing, would not work the same.

@griffstick: By that logic, Damnation would also destroy creatures that enter the battlefield after it was cast...
If a sorcery or an instant or an ability refers to "all creatures" and variants of that, it means "all creatures that can be affected as this spell/ability resolves".
I can't find the exact rule right now, but take a look at the Gatherer ruling for Overrun:
10/1/2009: Overrun affects only creatures you control at the time it resolves. It won't affect creatures that come under your control later in the turn.
Also, this should go in the Rules Q&A linked in the top bar.

When you cast the spell it impacts everything that is on the board. This effect applies once, and it (generally) applies until the end of the turn. Anthem effects sit on the field, and so the +1/+1 effect is applying to the field as a continuous action. Creatures you play with a spear out will instantly be hit by the +1/+1 buff, whereas although it lasts until end of turn, buffs from effects like Triumph of the Hordes would not benefit a creature played after the spell, as said spell is only applied to the board once. Similarly, you can give the board -5/-5, and then play a 5 toughness creature, and the creature will not die, because although the -5/-5 effect would have killed it, the creature was not on the board at the time the spell was cast. If you had an enchantment that gave the board -5/-5, then your creature would hit the field, have the effect applied and instantly die. I hope this clears things up for you.

Found the rules:
611.2c If a continuous effect generated by the resolution of a spell or ability modifies the characteristics or changes the controller of any objects, the set of objects it affects is determined when that continuous effect begins. After that point, the set wont change. (Note that this works differently than a continuous effect from a static ability.) [...]
Example: An effect that reads "All white creatures get +1/+1 until end of turn" gives the bonus to all permanents that are white creatures when the spell or ability resolveseven if they change color laterand doesnt affect those that enter the battlefield or turn white afterward.
For permanents:
611.3. A continuous effect may be generated by the static ability of an object.
611.3a A continuous effect generated by a static ability isnt "locked in"; it applies at any given moment to whatever its text indicates.
611.3b The effect applies at all times that the permanent generating it is on the battlefield or the object generating it is in the appropriate zone.
Example: A permanent with the static ability "All white creatures get +1/+1" generates an effect that continuously gives +1/+1 to each white creature on the battlefield. If a creature becomes white, it gets this bonus; a creature that stops being white loses it.

I find myself more and more wanting upvote and downvote buttons on answers in the Q&A. Steaditup is fully correct in post #1 as supported in the rules quoted by Hyperlocke in post #8.

Thank you everyone who put in their opinions and knowledge. griffstick I thought the same thing you did only because it said "until end of turn" Well if myriad happened then they would get it too but alas my idea won't work as the spell resolves before Myriad can get the creatures on the battlefield... ALMOST an epic turn, just need some tweaks such as flash added.
Daft Vader - That would not work as Myriad only takes the base level card for all its tokens. So your creature would have all those abilities but the tokens myriad produces are only the original card, no buffs come with it (such as equipment, aura's or spells attached).

I was assuming the use of something to give it flash as mentioned above.

They do not. The creatures you currently control get +1/+1, trample and infect. Then when your broodbirth viper attacks, it makes a 3/3 regular broodbirth viper token attacking each other opponent (or as many as you choose). You could attack with the viper and THEN cast triumph of the hordes if you've done any rule-bending (Leyline of Anticipation, Hypersonic Dragon, Quicken, Vedalken Orrery, Alchemist's Refuge)
