Thoughts on Assault Loam

Modern Deck Help forum

So I was looking at some recent 5-0 lists, and noticed this gem: TVigs' Assault Loam

I recently luck-sacked into a playset of Wrenn and Six , and I already have the manabase and other expensive pieces, so I'm thinking about building out the deck.

Any thoughts on the decklist or general tips for someone brand new to Seismic Loam?

Thanks much!

My only thought here is that the list looks really sweet, thanks for sharing :)

Sweet indeed! Maybe splash for Dark Confidant ... he'll draw a lot of lands. Not sure how good the Lightning Bolts are in your deck, they don't really synergize imho. Another option could be Grim Lavamancer

WizardOfTheNorthernCoast,
You bet ... I thought it looked extremely sweet too!

sergiodelrio,
The mana may be too tight for Bob (RG or 1B on T2 + followed by RRR on T3 = a tall order), but the card is definitely great, so it may be worthwhile.

Not sure on the Bolts either ... I assume TVigs just wanted a little interaction early. Though I suspect they're also a useful finisher (especially with the Retrace ultimate from W6) when we can't find Seismic Assault .

Thanks much!

I had a great time playing my list, so this one should be a blast as well. A couple thoughts on it. First I think some lands that can do some work for you are a must since Wrenn and Six can get them back. I used Blast Zone to stop hexproof, Quicksand for any agro also great against elemental decks, Kessig Wolf Run to get Countryside Crusher past chump blockers, and Ghost Quarter to blow up any land. Since we are using Life from the Loam I found having a few copies of Eternal Witness in the deck a must. And last although it seems like a good fit, I found Tireless Tracker to be of little use since I realy did not play more than 3-4 lands. Anyway I strongly suggest you try out some version of this deck, it is so fun to play and very powerful once you get it set up.

Why do you suppose TVigs runs snow lands? Just for funsies? Or is there a tactical reason I'm not aware of?

clancheek,
That's great to hear, and I REALLY appreciate all the tips. I'm slowly picking up the rest of the pieces and will give the deck a go, for sure!

darbish85,
I'm not sure, but probably mostly for the meme or because they like the art.

In highly competitive play, Snow Basics are probably "strictly better" than normal Basics, because an early Snow-Covered Mountain could make an opp think they're playing Skred, or an early Snow-Covered Forest could make an opp think they're playing an Arcum's Astrolabe deck like Bant Snow Control or 5c Niv-Mizzet, and either may make the opp misplay ... or at least spend mental energy wondering what deck they're on.

Another factor is on MTGO, where they publish every distinct deck that's 5-0'd over a given period, and Wizards has defined "distinct" as at least 20 cards different between lists. So brewers hoping to 5-0 and get their list published will sometimes add Snow-Covered Lands and other random cards in their 75 to make a deck more distinct from others.

I don't honestly see either being an factor with this deck though. It frankly doesn't seem like a great deck for highly competitive play, and it's not like there are a bunch of other Assault Loam decks in the MTGO deck-dumps :-D
