What cards surprised you from Kaladesh?

This limited environment looks to be very refreshing, there were a few cards that surprised me in how useful they were.

Ovalchase Daredevil was an easily recurred creature, I'm surprised they allowed it to trigger off of artifact tokens as well. Blocked with it aggressively, got it back with each fabricate trigger.

Morbid Curiosity was almost always a draw four or better for me, really overperformed in the W/B recursion archetype.

Metalspinner's Puzzleknot was a card I was always happy to see. While it wasn't an MVP of my prerelease, it was a welcome addition.

Fabricate as a mechanic in general was very enjoyable to me, I really liked how it turned on so many artifact synergies with little effort.

What was a card you didn't expect to perform as well as it did?

Green as an entire color for me. I went in thinking I would play red blue or white and just skip green and black entirely and then I looked at my pool and realized my only good cards were green. I ended up building a green red energy aggro deck and got third.

Demon of Dark Schemes performed better than expected, at least at the prerelease, where basically everyone had a few fabricate cards.

The synergy between Verdurous Gearhulk and Elegant Edgecrafters was surprising. As in, my opponent was at 7, and I had Edgecrafters on the field (no counters), and had a ton of 1-2 power chump blockers, and I was surprised when I topdecked gearhulk and killed him.

I was really surprised to be wining games with Thriving Rhino and Riparian Tiger.

I played a 2HG pre-release. We didn't pull many exciting cards, but we did manage to match Thriving Rhino with Dynavolt Tower and that pair alone won one game as the Rhino kept ahead of the pack.

Another game we managed to catch an Aethersquall Ancient with Gonti, Lord of Luxury which fed a Riparian Tiger and a Thriving Rhino enough to make short work of the opponents.

Aether Theorist and Voltaic Brawler stood out for me. Being able to scry every turn for only two mana once and one energy is very good, and if you had any other energy generators it gets better.

As for Voltaic Brawler it is one of the best cards in the set despite being uncommon. At 2 CMC, it is a powerhouse 4/3 trample when it attacks. Performed amazingly in my pre releases.

Durable Handicraft was the big surprise for me. I stuck it in only because I needed a two-drop, but was very pleased. Early-game, I found it a great use of extra mana whenever I wasn't quite on curve, and it perforned late-game as well.

I'm with MenacingBunny too, on Aether Theorist. I had forgotten how very good Sigiled Starfish was!

Oviya Pashiri, Sage Lifecrafter was surprisingly my most useful creature. Putting out a large creature every turn from turn 5 onwards won games pretty much on its own.

Had to be Gearseeker Serpent. I pulled 2. The card looks like your standard big over costed sea serpent but I was usually able to drop it for 5 or less every game. Used it to pilot vehicles, act as a big butt, and brought games to an end when I made it unblockable. I had a Torrential Gearhulk but I drew it in only a couple of my games. One time it got me a 2 for 1 but really didn't make a big board difference in limited.

Last game I played against a guy that pulled a Verdurous Gearhulk, 2 Voltaic Brawler, and a few vehicles. He crushed every person. He would cast the gearhulk, +4/+4 the brawler, and have the gear hulk pilot a vehicle.

for me, I was really impressed with Aetherworks Marvel, even though I think people were already big on that card before it came out, right?

I was honestly disappointed I didn't pull any Thriving Turtle for my prerelease. I'd have played it in a heartbeat.

And you should have, the look on an opponents face when they're dying to a 4/7 turtle is absolutely priceless.

For me it was cards that won me games, that I didn't expect to. Every time I played them, I won.

  1. Fumigate

  2. Combustible Gearhulk

  3. Torrential Gearhulk

  4. Welding Sparks
