What besides Faerie Macabre can be discarded for value?

Deck Help forum

I'm making a deck that cascades into Restore Balance, and I want to be able to clear my hand at instant speed, so I'm looking for cards like Simian Spirit Guide and Faerie Macabre that I can immediately drop from my hand, preferably for value. Oh, and they have to have a CMC of at least 3.

Also it would be good if they are black, because if I can't find many I'm gonna run 4x Soul Spike, but that's less important.

Creatures with cycling? I can't name then all off the top of my head, but they're played in Living End. They draw you a card at instant speed, and most cost one to cycle. I know one is Architects of Will.

Cycling is no good because it puts another card in my hand, the goal is to have no cards in hand and sacrifice all of my lands to Greater Gargadon so that after Restore Balance resolves neither player has any lands or cards in hand, and I have a massive beastie.

not discarding for value, but One with Nothing could be an option. Your deck idea seems awesome! good luck to you!

It would be an option if I weren't trying to cascade into restore balance

right, it's only 1 cmc. sorry, I can't think of anything else that works.

does the green version of Simian Spirit Guide work? Elvish Spirit Guide?

Right, sorry, my 7:00 AM self forgot what Restore Balance did. I can't think of anything else except for the green Spirit Guide which isn't legal.

Surgical Extraction can be used at instant speed, costs just 2 life, and is black.

your two examples and Street Wraith are the only creatures i can find in modern that can be discarded for free.

other relevant abilities for discarding creatures are transmute, channel, reinforce and grandeur. transmute lets you tutor, but doesn't actually reduce the number of cards in your hand. grandeur is free, but has its own restriction.

some other creatures that let you discard in their own way: Phantasmagorian, Pack Rat, Oona's Prowler, Lotleth Troll... nevermind the last three, forgot about the cmc restriction.

out of curiosity, how does this deck win after resolving Restore Balance?

also phyrexian mana and 0 mana spells i guess. Claws of Gix might fit your theme, or any of the pacts if you're comboing off somehow. Spellbook for trolling.

Nomp -- Surgical Extraction is a great call! thanks :)

shuflw -- The win con is Greater Gargadon coming down a couple turns later.

This is the deck right now Restore Balance

It's not all modern legal, but it has almost every cards that have the ability to cast stuff for free. If you see anything I missed, feel free to post them and I will add them.
