Grixis EDH; which general?

Commander (EDH) forum

I'm constructing a UBR deck and have not decided on a commander mostly because it will not be all that important to how the deck operates (control). So, with that in mind, which of the Grixis legendaries is the best all-purpose commander?

Nekusar, the Mindrazer and Thraximundar are the best choices in grixis. The first allows you to effectively run Wheel of Fortune effects and kills off all opponents in one turn. Thraximundar is best as a control deck with the wincon being commander damage. I have played against numerous thrax decks and if he isn't dealt with, you will lose the game.

Grixis doesn't have any revolutionary generals.

Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge is probably the most flexible in terms of in-game options.

Thraximundar is alright, but it doesn't do anything unless you cater to its ability. Good for stax.

Sedris, the Traitor King is a utility general, and it works for stax and reanimator.

Nekusar, the Mindrazer is decent as a punisher general, but has to be the center of the deck.

You can always go old skool Nicol Bolas ..he kinda sucks though unless it's the Legends version....then he is awesome.

Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge is great for some fun plays, never know what cards you're going to exile with her.

Nekusar, the Mindrazer is good at taking everyone out at the same time, though as Epochalyptik has said, you need to center the entire deck around him.

Garza Zol, Plague Queen and Thraximundar both aim to win through commander damage.

Have always wondered what Lord of Tresserhorn would be like as a commander, he could deal some sweet damage and comes with regen if you're into some of the older legends.

Nicol Bolas doesn't have trample and the upkeep cost restricts your mana for counterspells and other spells. Moral of the story, don't run Nicol Bolas . I will admit, the legends version is really nice. Timespiral timeshifted isn't that great.

@drpeppercan: Lord of Tresserhorn is used as a combo general. People will use him that for they aren't targeted until the lock everybody else from the game. he is also good with Torpor Orb /Sundial of the Infinite (i think Epochalyptik can correct me).

Dragons are greedy bastards...that's why he demands mana from you...because he is awesome. lol

@Droxium: Lord of Tresserhorn 's ability is an ETB ability, so it can be safely stopped with Torpor Orb or Sundial of the Infinite .

Well, if you want to talk about Greed , then lets look over Draco in an artifact deck. Now, shall we begin?

Nicol bolas is awesome...use the creature and the planeswalker for added flare...grixis really doesn't need the actual general to be played to win. Plenty of other ways to do so...Omniscience , Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker , Boom/Bust ....pass turn

To be perfectly honest, in non-tournament situations...like kitchen table EDH....I win consistently with a Vaevictis Asmadi Jund deck without dual lands or all the other bells and whistles...edh is about experimentation and fun....even at my lgs back in NJ, the owner would close down the shop and all the people 21 years or older would remain til all hours of the morning downing cheap beers and playing janky shit....that's what EDH is about...to me at least

Grixis is really fun, and has really fun generals. Which one is best depends on how you want to play.

Sedris, the Traitor King is great if you like reanimator, and/or abusing ETB effects. (You can also keep the unearthed creatures permanently with things like Conjurer's Closet or Teferi's Veil .)

Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge is great if you like casting big, giant sorcery spells that make friends and enemies alike cower in fear.

Nekusar, the Mindrazer is for you if when Whispering Madness was spoiled, you thought, there must be a way to make this janky card awesome, but Im not sure how

Thraximundar has the most awesome name of any creature in MTG. And he looks like something youd see if John Woo directed Lord of the Rings.

Nicol Bolas is Nicol freakin Bolas. nuff said.

If none of these seem awesome to you, well, youre probably better off playing some white-colored happy kitty cat-themed general or something.

I've seen Gwendlyn Di Corci used to great effect.

I don't think Teferi's Veil would protect your creatures from being exiled when they're unearthed, since Unearth specifically says "if it would leave the battlefield", which phasing does.

Sedris, the Traitor King, Or Nicol Bolas, who is my favorite.I'd run an Unscythe, Killer of Kings as well. (In the deck i mean.)

I've just created a Grixis deck using Sol'kanar the Swamp King as my general. It's basically a mono black deck though, but with some grixis splashed in.
