Hellcarver Demon Combos

Commander Deck Help forum

I'm looking to build a Hellcarver Demon EDH deck using Esper colors ().

Here are the only cards/mechanics that combo with Hellcarver Demon immediately:

  • Persist/Undying
  • Voidwalk
  • Faith's Reward/Second Sunrise
  • Long-Term Plans/Enigma Sphinx
  • Now, of course, I am including reanimation, possibly a Storm card or two, Cataclysm, every extra turn, Gravepurge, etc. But that isn't what I'm looking for as in combos. I'm looking for immediate results of keeping creatures/other permanents on the battlefield after Hellcarver Demon's triggered ability.

Any ideas or things I've missed?

Just came to say you made the right choice, best demon. My favourite card in my Rakdos the Defiler deck.

Along the line of Voidwalk, and actually better because they save everything and allow them to do combat damage as well since they are instant, are Ghostway and Eerie Interlude.

@Gidgetimer, Ghostway and Eerie Interlude don't work, for several reasons:

  • Hellcarver Demon sacs everything FIRST then casts spells
  • Hellcarver Demon also gets rid of your hand, so you would essentially have to top dick either or. Good luck there.
  • Thanks to Hellcarver Demon, you ain't got lands. So even if you top dick either or, or recur it somehow, you can't even cast it.

  • Why Voidwalk works:

Both Voidwalk and Hellcarver Demon are combat damage triggered abilities. Thus, they both go onto the stack once Hellcarver Demon deals damage. You want Voidwalk to resolve first, exiling a creature that has already been on the field, before Hellcarver Demon sacrifices it, and have it return at the end step after Hellcarver Demon resolves.

Not to mention that it Ciphers and stays on Hellcarver Demon from that point on.

I'm sorry, I assumed if you are making an esper EDH deck centered around a non-esper identity, non-legendary creature you were running with enough tutors that you could easily find one or the other and then cast it in response to the sac and discard ability.

    Gidgetimer, explain.

I am making an Esper EDH deck around a non-esper identity, non-legendary creature. However, due to that creature being Hellcarver Demon, every time he deals damage I must sacrifice everything but him. How exactly would I be able to cast cards without lands/rocks/etc in response to sacs/discard triggers?

Earnestly and honestly, I wish to know. As of right now, I have just assumed Hellcarver Demon was a mono-black Narset, Enlightened Master that also does creatures, but gets rid of everything else (everything in play and hand) for that compromise.

Oh wait, are you referring to the first time Hellcarver Demon triggers? So I would still have my lands and such during that time?

Yes. I assume you are running a very high density of tutors. So you can:

Tutor Hellcarver and cast him. Since he cost 6 you should have enough mana that you can both tutor and cast one of the two named flicker effects saving your board and allowing them to swing a second time with hellcarver. Again since you are going to have high tutor density you may hit one off of the trigger allowing you to grab the other flicker if you find enough rocks.

At least that was my thought process. Again i apologize if you don't think it can be pulled off. I just assumed that it could work.

It could, however, the problem arises with filling your hand again.

Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur and similar cards could fix this, but then that brings additional cards needed for this combo. Meh, I'll make it work.

Thank you much for the help. This not only helps round the deck into a specific combo (I was branching out earlier) but also allows for me to add more cards that directly combo with Hellcarver Demon.
