Territorial Scythecat

Creature — Cat

Trample

Whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control, put a +1/+1 counter on Territorial Scythecat.

Drellino thanks for the suggestions! I was actually running Courser of Kruphix, but didn't feel like it improved the speed of the deck, however you can run it for sure. However I absolutely agree, that there are too many 3-drops in this deck, so I thought about Fearless Fledgling instead of Territorial Scythecat. Concerning Felidar Retreat, I'll try it as finisher. It brings down the manacurve of the deck down a bit, so that's a big plus.

Please try swapping out one Territorial Scythecat for a Cosima, God of the Voyage  Flip they are removal proof while exiled and refill your entire hand after a few turn in exile after the opponent wipes our your board. some tricks I like to use are leaving an Evolving Wilds unpopped so I can bring it in at the end of the opponent's turn for hand refill and big swing. I promise you won't regret it!!

A card that I have had good fun with is Skyclave Pick-Axe. Since it comes with the free first time equip, it basically doubles the gains for the landfall triggers on all of your creatures for the one green mana. Throw it on the mammoth, get a double trigger with one of the sac lands, now it's 11/11, or 19/19 after a bit of the 'ol Roiling Regrowth lol. Honestly though, I don't know what I would cut here. I don't really play standard and am generally not familiar with the meta (not that it wouldn't matter if I was because it changes every month, hence my aversion to standard). My pioneer version of this deck pretty much ditches the interaction and goes all in on getting as much land on the field as I can, as quickly as I can, with the hopes of overwhelming my opponent before they can play anything that needs answering (because I won't have any answers...). Might make an interesting sideboard choice if it looks like you won't need as much removal in a particular match up or something maybe.

I'm glad I stumbled upon your deck. I had also passed on the Territorial Scythecat for the same reasons you did, but now I'm thinking that trample might actually be a pretty handy little ability to have and I doubt I would have given it another thought if not for reading the comments on this. I'll have to play around with that actually. Great deck here!

Thanks KBK7101. I initially overlooked Territorial Scythecat because its base stats are pretty weak for the cost, but Trample may be more worthwhile as you say. I’ll add it to the maybeboard for now.

Would Territorial Scythecat be worth swapping in? Having trample could help a great deal against decks that have lots of creatures.

Great job on the deck either way! Super low budget decks always surprise me with how well they can run.

Jackfrost23 Thanks so much for your input! I love the suggestion of Zuran Orb now that Titania, Protector of Argoth is a viable option. The only reason I won't include Crucible of Worlds and Urza's Saga is because I'm trying to work on a budget, but they are great additions never the less. I think the most debatable slot is Territorial Scythecat and Rampaging Baloths. I just like these cards and I'm finding myself not beeing able to kill my darlings :D

Alrighty.

General Notes: I see a whole lotta fatties and some ramp but not too much interaction. I'd definitely cut some of those high cmc cards and replace them with more low to the ground creatures. Also, imo splashing white would be a lot more useful than splashing black because you can use Steppe Lynx and maybe Path to Exile along with white's sexy sideboard suite, and Ol' Obby is not worth the splash. I haven't tested Nissa of Shadowed Boughs , but if she turns out to be op as fuck, then I would suggest adding some black removal at least like Push and Trophy .

In modern, ramp like Cultivate and Kodama's Reach are gonna be way too slow. I'd definitely cut them. If you want ramp of this kind, then maybe Search for Tomorrow . Also I don't really see why Crackle with Power is there, although I guess you could cast it for a decent amount with the ramp and Lotus Cobra . Another "ramp" spell I think is worth trying is Atarka's Command . It can ramp, bolt the opponent, pump all your creatures, clap your opponent's lifegain, etc. Also can't forget our boy Lightning Bolt .

For creatures, I'd at least cut Ob to 1 copy, if not altogether. Same with Omnath, Locus of Rage , unless you want to lean more into the elemental tribal. Territorial Scythecat does not seem worth it. I like Ancient Greenwarden , but it costs 6, and it doesn't actually do anything by itself either, it depends on other landfall creatures, so I'd also cut that to 0-1.

To replace some of these cuts, I suggest more aggressive creatures such as Steppe Lynx as previously mentioned along with Brushfire Elemental . Wayward Guide-Beast is really interesting as well.

For lands, fetch lands would obviously increase the deck's power significantly, but I assume you aren't using them because of budget constraints.

Don't really have anything else to add rn but if I think of smth I'll be sure to tell you.

Seer's Sundial seems less optimal than Tireless Tracker . How often do you put creatures into play with power 3 or greater? I'm not sure if Elemental Bond is strong in this particular build as is.

4 mana for even 3 3/3 beast tokens is decent. Your current list already contains Arasta of the Endless Web , and I love that it can help start the loop with Ghost Town if you have the right setup. A couple other token generating spells for surprise factor are Ezuri's Predation , Fresh Meat , and Caller of the Claw .

Dawnglade Regent not necessarily a big finisher, but monarch is another nice way to get card draw and the hexproof for your creatures is nice. Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger is also nice, but a bit pricey.

The Tireless Tracker clues stick around so they're just there when you have spare mana that you don't want to go to waste which is again better than the one opportunity per landfall with Seer's Sundial and the tracker can get bigger as you sacrifice the clues. I especially like that the tokens trigger Kodama and if the land you put into play can tap for 2 mana you can sac a clue to draw a card which may draw you more land to put into play from Kodama triggers.

Quirion Ranger can help provide a clutch blocker or that one extra mana you need for some spell. I like that it helps you have more land in hand for landfall triggers off of Kodama. Since Ashaya makes your creatures into forests they can tap for mana so they all become targets for Quirion Ranger to untap.

Kamahl’s Will does seem like a decent fit for this deck as a way to go wide and removal. Territorial Scythecat seems okay similar to the running a Managorger Hydra but takes a bit to build up. Shifting Ceratops it has some versatility, but I'm not sure what you want this for in a landfall deck. Primeval Bounty is currently in your list here on tappedout. Branching Evolution not sure your strategy is putting a lot of counters on stuff, more dropping lots of tokens on the fiel. Fertilid synergizes well with Retreat to Kazandu . Garruk's Uprising again I don't think you're usually putting a lot of big creatures into play to benefit from the trigger. Court of Bounty seems better than Colossal Majesty and has an added benefit. Reclamation Sage is great, and I'm also interested in the new 2-drop Masked Vandal since it exiles stuff, and another budget tutor for these low cost utility creatures is Woodland Bellower .
