I got a few boxes of both ixalans sets and i was just wondering what tribe is the "most effective" between pirate vampire or dino

It kind of depends what cards you cracked.

I don't know anyone at my LGS who has been playing Vampires, but that doesn't mean they aren't viable. seem to be the colours to build in.

I've seen Pirates played in an Aggro style.

Tempo Pirates can work, but it really needs The Scarab God to close out the top end.

Dinosaurs are probably your best bet. There are enough cards in both sets to build a fairly viable budget deck.

That being said, you should probably buy a couple of Ghalta, Primal Hunger, Carnage Tyrant, and a playset of Ripjaw Raptor if you want your deck to be competitive.

What about Merfolk? Ive been piloting them to decent success at FNM and beating Dinos regularly. Ive got a suspicion that the lifegain in vampires beats merfolk. I also think Unblockable/flying R/B pirates could be very good.

Most effective for standard/draft/something else ? Unfortunately, i think none of the tribes found their place as a whole tribe in standard, but more in the form of splashing. R/G/W dinos susceptible to mass removal and not much payoffs among them, they are just big and dumb with few protections. Merfolks could be a thing, but still weak to mass removal and can run out of gas quickly. Vampires - still haven't seen any concrete list other than mono W vampires played by Wilson hunter.

See what you pull (make sure to draft all the boxes for extra value) and build the best deck of whatever comes out. There is no definitive best deck/tribe. BG Explore could be the best deck you pull from the boxes.

"R/G/W dinos susceptible to mass removal and not much payoffs among them"

I don't know who you've been playing against but StuBi has been having awesome success with Stompy Whompy Dinos.

Blossoming Defense and Heroic Intervention shut down both targetted and mass removal.

Trample gets damage through, Carnage Tyrant must be specifically Sided for, and Ghalta, Primal Hunger usually hits the field on Turn 5.

I think is stronger than , particularly due to the fact that we no longer have Attune with Aether around to colour fix.

Now that the season has progressed I have seen Merfolk Decks being successfully piloted at some LGS I play at.

Again, they have protection in the form of Blossoming Defense, and Heroic Intervention.

They can re-establish their board state very quickly, if a wipe does happen. Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca makes the Tribe very strong.

I will point out, though, that Merfolk were NOT one of the Tribes that the OP asked for help with.

It depends on what you pulled and what your budget is, Vampires and Pirates probably cheapest, Dinos and Merfolk more. Theres key pieces to each of the tribes and so youll wanna see how much itd cost to get the cards you need. If budget is no issue and you are for sure wanting to go Tribal Id say Merfolk or Dinos (of course theyre the 2 I run so kinda biased).

Merfolk is gonna be more Aggro and Dinos Midrange. Thinking of the paper-rock-scissors theory, where Aggro beats Control, Control beats Midrange and Midrange beats Aggro, you could see what your local meta looks like and try and choose the deck that is more favorably matched against the most played decks. If lots of Control play Merfolk to tax their removal and if lots of Aggro play Dinos to stabilize early and then take over.

If Dinos, Id say run more Thunderherd Migration than usual 4xOtepec Huntmaster and 4x Drover of the Mighty, I played Meta Shred Red (a Aggro deck) at Showdown yesterday and went 2-0 against Naya Dinos by killing their Dino-dorks and preventing them from getting anything going (a contradiction to above mentioned theory but is negated by non-creature ramp).

Good luck! Brew all 4 decks on T/O here to test, then choose your fave!
