[PRIMER] The Scary Turtles

Standard forum

The Meandering Towershell has been considered a bulk rare, lets make it a build-around card for standard. Because when you use Whip of Erebos on the turtle, it stays on the battlefield and attacks the turn after you whip it in. Just imagine having two 5/9 lifelink creatures that attack on alternate turns. Now imagine having all four out. Scary enough for you? Gain 10 life every turn, possibly kill two creatures or do 10 damage.

Whip exiles the turtle when it blinks itself so correct me if I am wrong but doubt it would work.

No, what happens is you activate Whip of Erebos 's ability to return a Meandering Towershell to the battlefield. You enter combat phase and attack with the Meandering Towershell , the ability triggers and it exiles itself. Then Whip of Erebos tries to exile it, but because it is already exiled, it doesn't get exiled by the whip, but itself.

Whip of Erebos ability is a replacement effect, and therefore doesn't use the stack.. Right?

Under rules for Whip of Erebos on the gatherer.9/15/2013 If a creature returned to the battlefield with Whip of Erebos would leave the battlefield for any reason, its exiled instead. However, if that creature is already being exiled, then the replacement effect wont apply. If the spell or ability that exiles it later returns it to the battlefield (as Chained to the Rocks might, for example), the creature card will return to the battlefield as a new object with no relation to its previous existence. The effects from Whip of Erebos will no longer apply to it.

hmm... so you could use stuff like Cloudshift to keep creatures with the whip?

This was already proven effective with Obzedat, Ghost Council in some standard Orzhov decks. Towershell is not Obzedat good with it, but it's fatter and has islandwalk and it's easier to dump your turtles into the graveyard on purpose now, so it's not without uses.

smackjack that would work too, yeah.

I would imagine you'd want plenty of Sultai's self-mill, including some Nyx Weaver s to rescue any whips you dump.

This isn't a primer...

Also, 2 card combos that do maybe 5 damage sometimes aren't the best, especially when they cost like 27 mana.

More like 9 mana, but it is just not viable. I would rather use that nine mana to deal 12 damage of 3 Jeskai Charm . Seems a lot more reasonable.

Marking something that is 2 sentences as primer is just wrong.

I made a deck around him here : The Turtle Carries On
He works with world wipes like End Hostilities , since you can cast them while he's exiled to clear the board.
He also works well with Spirit Bonds , triggering every time he enters.
Of course, Whip of Erebos is great as well.

Not to mention how well he works with a pruphoros on the board. Free two damage every turn? I think it is a good card with lots of value at the five drop spot. If you dont attack with him and just use him as a body he can take just about anything turned to the side at him.

What is even more fun is copying Meandering Towershell with Clever Impersonator...

Swing with the Clever Impersonator copy...
It Exiles itself...
Next turn on your combat phase, it returns, and you can copy any permanent and it will be tapped... and attacking. (Even if it won't do any damage)

So... you can have a tapped and attacking Whip of Erebos..!!
Perhaps you can copy your opponent's Elspeth, Sun's Champion... and be attacking with her!! (You know you want to attack with her, and not just the tokens.)

Yeah Meandering Towershell + Purphoros, God of the Forge + Temur Ascendancy would be pretty good but slow/spendy to combo
