Curse Decks

Standard Deck Help forum

Posted on Aug. 1, 2017, 5:48 p.m. by Minihorror227

I'm needing some help with a deck. I'm wanting to build either a Black or a Black/White curse deck for standard.

My question is, is a curse deck a decent deck in standard, and after rotation, how badly will it be effected?

Thank all of you guys for the help!

What other mechanics do you think you'll include, along with Curses?

Ive though about making a curse-themed deck for modern, but its just not viable. Especially with cards like Leyline of Sanctity, so I assume for standard its probably not viable without adding other mechanics or strategies.

For other mechanics other than curses, I don't know. if I was to build it it would most likely be mono black or W/B control. Are there any cards with mechanics that would bring my curses to the battlefield in standard right now? I don't think so.

Also, i'm still not sure on standard or modern with it. To me it seems viable for modern whether or not they have that card in side board. My point with this is that since it would be control I would obviously put cards in my sideboard to deal with it.

You'd need Force of Will in your Sideboard to take care of Leyline of Sanctity in Modern.

Which would mean you'd probably have to build in

@Argy, two things. Force of Will isn't modern legal, and also can't counter the "If this is in your opening hand" abilities of the Leylines.

As far as standard viability, I don't think so. Maybe as a subtheme to a black based control deck, bet I can't really think of a base list off the top of my head.

Modern would be more doable, not super competitive, but I could see it augmenting one of the /x enchantment prison decks. Not something I would take to a GP or Star City event, but for FNM-esque tournament and friendly play, it would be fine.

Argy, wouldnt you just be able to have enchantment removal in sideboard from white?

If you've already got a video explaining the deck tech you should just build the deck, and playtest it against other decks on this site, to see if it is viable.

We can give you better input if you make a deck that we can test.

I want to test it before I give a more complete opinion, but on the surface, I have concerns. There's a lot going on at the 4 drop slot, but almost nothing going on at 3. Bontu's Last Reckoning isn't something I want to play on turn 3 in general, but I especially don't want to when my powerful stuff is at 4. I want to play it on 5, and be able to follow it up with a Grasp of Darkness when I already have a Torment of Scarabs in play. Whereas if I were to use Fumigate, I loose the Grasp on the same turn cycle, but I can follow it up with Ob Nixilis or Cast Out and a two drop, so switching out the sweepers seems good.

I also think I like Doomfall here. As I said, it feels lacking in 3 drops, and that can be good in any matchup. I want to test before I dive deeper, but those are my biggest initial impressions

Dracoson, thats how i'm feeling about it. If i'm correct his deck was a "budget" build theres probably a better build out there

I'm pretty much just wanting to see if it would be a viable deck for fnm before buying all the cards. I'm in the middle of building a g/w cat tribal deck and still need to get 3 more Metallic Mimic which are pretty expensive all together.

If the deck turns out to not be viable to standard then i will most likely put another post in modern deck help and see what i get there. I have most of the modern curses right now and was actually going to go pick up 2 of the Curse of Thirst for a small casual deck i built to play wity my friends

Okay, so after a little testing, it really confirmed my initial impressions, so I made some basic changes (changed the sweeper and un-glutted the 4 drop slot), and I'm actually seeing some potential here. Here's the adjusted list: A Curse Upon Thee

While it still needs more testing, and the meta game is going to determine whether this style of deck has legs, I think it's at least worth the time to start doing the real testing. Enough of the guts of it survive rotation that it may just wait for that before it happens, but we'll see.

Dracoson, that is actually what I was thinking about. I have two fatal push right now and may get a third one but I don't really know about getting it right now I may wait until closer to rotation in order to get the more expensive cards. So far I have all of the curses except for three of the trespassers curse then I need to get the fumigate. When rotation happens and shambling vents are taken out what do you think would be a good replacement for them as of right now?

Minihorror227 says... #21

To me the bad part with rotation is going to be how the accursed witch will no longer be able to be in the deck which means that I will have to find a different creature to put in if I'm correct there is a creature that is white that brings an aura back from the graveyard to my hand but I can't remember what the name of it is right now

Argy says... #22

You are thinking of Auramancer, which is not Standard legal at the moment.

There's not really a replacement for Shambling Vent.

The more we talk about this deck, the more I am convinced that you should work on it as a Modern build, it will be cheaper after rotation, and build something else for Standard.
