Scars of Mirrodin Speculation

General forum

So I was talking to some judges and you heard it here first:

  • Poison counters are back
  • Elspeth may get reprinted (recent rule change for her final ability specifically - puts an indestructibility emblem into play in its own zone that cannot be targeted or effected by cards)
  • Poison counters also go in the same area as the emblem

Personally: - Hoping for a new Tez! - Thinking Steel Overseer will go up in price!

I have an interesting speculation... Has anyone read the comics about Elspeth? If they have they would know that deep down she is actually dark and depressive. Have you see the picture speculated to be for her? It's also somewhat dark. I wouldn't be surprised at all if she turned out to be W/B in scars. I know that is a long shot but I could see it happening.

Someone also speculated a green planeswalker? I agree, you know who I think it will be? Rhys. My reasoning? I play Duel of the Planeswalkers on Xbox. Before Nissa was announced as a planeswalker she was shown as one on the xbox game. Well anyone who plays it knows that Rhys has a deck on the game in the most recent update. Magic is pro at throwing out very subtle clue and foreshadowing events. I believe in the new block at some point Rhys will be a planeswalker.

Anyone else hoping they'll print a good red or black planeswalker finally? I think Elspeth is going to be Green/White, and that Tezz might be blue/black or something (corrupted). The new sword makes it seem like R-W and U-G pairings are going to be big though, along with black all on its lonesome (which may actually be a nice change if they give black some good cards? Damnation reprint?)

how aboutTooth and Nail ? how to be reprinted =(

Ok, If you don't already have it... Now's the time for Twitter...

Got this information from it.

Ezuri's Brigade 2GG Creature - Elf Warrior

Metalcraft - As long as you control 3 or more artifacts, Ezuri's Brigade gets +4/+4 and has trample. 4/4

Holy crap.

Will post up more as I find it. :)

September 4, 2010 4:45 p.m.

merubhanot says... #7

Metalcraft? Is that a keyword?

That card might be good. It's a little hard to tell.

September 4, 2010 4:48 p.m.

Venser, the Sojourner 3WB Plainswalker - Venser

Yup, thats right... 1/1 - This card is seriously gonna get broken! :)

September 4, 2010 4:51 p.m.

merubhanot says... #12

Whoa, Venser's +2 Ability will be phenomenal for blinking back planeswalkers with negative things (Free bounce with jace each turn?).

Seems like a pretty exciting card.

September 4, 2010 4:54 p.m.

merubhanot says... #13

Wait, there seems to be some disagreement. Is he U/W or B/W. Seems very relevant..

I'm looking at Twittered pic's from the reveal party going down in Amsterdam at this moment, hence these cards are pretty much confirmed spoilers.

Thrummingbird - 1U (blue)

Creature - Bird Horror

Flying

Whenever Thrummingbird deals combat damage to a player, proliferate.

Uncommon - 1/1

This guys insane. He will be in nearly ALL blue type decks as much if not more than Jace!

September 4, 2010 5:07 p.m.

merubhanot says... #20

Wow, those are pretty interesting.

The bird is good but I'm not sure he's THAT good ;-)

September 4, 2010 5:09 p.m.

cardcoin says... #21

Do you not know the power of Proliferate as yet sir? It's going to be a NEARLY broken Mechanic thats gonna be causing a lot of pain, and trust me, if things get really bad, it could force folk to be running lightening bolts/paths/everything else to stop this blasted bird from attacking... ever...

If it does get damage in, I can then add a counter onto everything that already has a counter...

(you may choose any number of permanent and/or players with counters on them, then give each another counter of the kind already there)....

Steel overseer - Give counters to artifact creatures.... bird attacking, deal damage and give more counters to all the creatures with +1/+1 counters... if theres a plainswalker on my side of the board, give him a loyalty counter, and if the opponent has a poison counter, give him ANOTHER one.

Proliferate is VERY much in the land of crazy comboness...

September 4, 2010 5:14 p.m.

cardcoin says... #22

Now all we need is some crazy instant that duplicates an ability, and mirrodiin could be broken before it's released lol

September 4, 2010 5:16 p.m.

merubhanot says... #23

Anyone realize the interaction between that bird and Venser? Seems pretty hot.

September 4, 2010 5:19 p.m.

cardcoin says... #24

Ichorclaw Myr CC - 2

Artifact Creature - Myr

Infect

Whenever Ichorclaw Myr becomes blocked, it gets +2/+2 until end of turn.

September 4, 2010 5:20 p.m.

ThaXecutioner says... #25

@ merubhanot

I just commented on that combination on another forum. The Venser/Thrummingbird combo is definitely going to show up in a lot of decks.

September 4, 2010 5:27 p.m.

merubhanot says... #26

I'm not sure it's that good, since Venser + Wall of Omens seems almost as good (and with Sea Gate Oracle, he's pretty awesome too).

http://mtg-jp.com/eventc/ptams10/article/008364/

has all the newly spoiled cards.

good thing I have 4 ;-)

Lich will go up too, with the indestructible equip.

September 4, 2010 6:07 p.m.

cardcoin says... #30

Also, Venser + Sun Titan = Busted...

It's like getting 2 cards back from the grave during your turn, then attacking and then flashing the titan out again during the second main phase for yet another 2 cards back. Anyone else thinking that White/blue control just got handed a massive boost?

September 4, 2010 6:16 p.m.

nammertime says... #31

Proliferate makes me happy because levelers will finally not be so crappy in general.

September 4, 2010 6:40 p.m.

cardcoin says... #32

I'm not so sure about that... but I'll hold my tongue until we get more of the set revealed. If Proliferate is on a creature as an activated ability, then Training Grounds could also see some serious money making attention.

But thats something I think will be unlikely.

September 4, 2010 6:45 p.m.

nammertime says... #33

I bet they got the idea from their own Venerated Teacher whilst wanting to make poison counters work.

September 4, 2010 6:46 p.m.

nammertime says... #34

Contagion Clasp already helps level up.

September 4, 2010 6:47 p.m.

nammertime says... #35

Well, only if they have one level up counter already on them, haha, but still. I'm gonna try something with that when the rest of the set is revealed and I get more info. It's fun to build these things just for the hell of it.

September 4, 2010 6:48 p.m.

cardcoin says... #36

Clone Shell - Casting Cost : 5

Artifact Creature - Shapeshifter (Uncommon)

Imprint - When Clone Shell enters the battlefield, look at the top four cards of your library, exile one face down, then put the rest on the bottom of your library in any order.

When Clone Shell is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, turn the exiled card face up. If it's a creature card, put it onto the battlefield under your control.

2/2

Blue/Green has now got something crazy to play with.

Scry or use Jace's Brainstorm ability to get something stacked onto the top of the library, play this little thing, and Imprint it under the card. Then destroy it with oh... Naturalize , and everyone can cry as you've just unleashed an Emrakul, the Aeons Torn onto the field. Could get this going as early as turn 4...

Now thats a game changer card right there.

September 4, 2010 7:56 p.m.

Loyalty 4

September 4, 2010 9:36 p.m.

cardcoin says... #38

That seems to be the most of the spoilers from the party being had in Netherlands. With this much juice though, I suspect that Pre-orders and pricing speculation will make the new Elspeth and Venser very desirable and expensive cards.

The new Mox though is something of a mixed card to me. it's nice, but it's also a legendary artifact, and NOT just as is... will be interesting to see if it makes play or sink like a Time Reversal . Still... Some awsome cards to think about.

Whats your personal thoughts on the cards spoiled thus far? (search for them on twitter to find their pic's - They are for real!)

September 4, 2010 10 p.m.

merubhanot says... #39

Wait, are you sure on elspeth? It seems really strange? I don't like the new mox

ThaXecutioner says... #40

Yes, what he posted is correct:

September 4, 2010 10:12 p.m.

cardcoin says... #41

@user:merubanot

I was thinking the same things, but given the theme of this set, I'm actually not surprised that they would make Elspeth this way inclined.

It will be interesting to see what other token shinanigans will come about from this set...

Also, on the Mox issue... I couldn't see them doing it any other way to be honest. 0 casting cost is crazy as it is, but the fact that it's also legendary is enough to stop it from going nuts on it's own accord... I mean, think of it this way...

Mox, ornithoptor + Memnite are all 0 casting cost... God knows what kind of 1 drop artifact creatures there will be, but if you go drop those three alone, then your immediatly got 2 mana open and 2 creatures on the board... That could open up for a first turn Steel Overseer , and thats just for starters... you could even see a possible first turn Shared Discovery !!!

If the Mox was not legendary, it would very quickly outprice the Plainswalkers, and cause it to be banned... as if it's not broken enough already!

@user:thexecutioner

Thanks for the image proof.

Shadovarn says... #42

Eh, the Venser PW spec doesn't seem to possible. Going from what he had/would do back in Timespiral, he would be more bounce and interrupt. Though his ulti seems possible.

September 5, 2010 12:25 a.m.

cardcoin says... #43

Venser won't work well in my head unless there are more "come into play" creatures brought out in this set to compliment this ability...

Though the ultimate ability could set up for an interesting end game... Being able to cast 0 casting cost stuff with that emblem in play would make things all the more deadly...

(remember, his emblem removes from play forever)... Guess we'll just have to wait and see how many more creatures/artifacts/equipment gets proliferate to make a 1 turn win scenario possible???

September 5, 2010 12:39 a.m.

merubhanot says... #44

@ Shadovarn

You seem to be debating what Venser would be, but this is actually what he is. He was spoiled today :-). I admit that he is strange though.

Venser's +2 and his ultimate work well in u/w control decks featuring cards like Wall of Omens , especially decks that are counter-heavy and can draw out the game. At that point, late game counterspells not only lock down, but also swing the game by exiling permanents. I think u/w control is where Venser will find a place in standard.

His -1 seems a little strange, especially because it doesnt really work with his other abilities, but I see it as being occasionally useful for pushing through the last bits of damage somewhere. He may also see play as a 1-of in u/w weenie decks (With the new elspeth), where that ability might be good, who knows?

@ cardcoin

I think the mox won't be that overpowered in standard. It's definitely interesting, but in order to get that crazy turn one play that you suggested, half your deck would have to be garbage. That being said, I'm sure it will see standard play. I think mox opal will see much more play in a format like Vintage, where really broken artifacts run rampant, and other moxen are legal. In those decks 3 playable artifacts on turn 1 is often pretty easy, and Mox Opal will be able to tap for ANY color right away, which is pretty crazy. That alone may cause its price to go up and stay quite high. It won't be anywhere near that good in standard.

September 5, 2010 12:53 a.m.

cardcoin says... #45

@merubhanot

The Mox could be seeing some solid play espicially with what was spoilt earler. The question on folks lips though is more to do with dead cards because of it being a legendary artifact... That's the real killer to this.

I'm already thinking Ornithoptor + Mox + Memnite + Steel Overseer + possibly Shared Discovery + Renegade Doppelganger + Goblin Bushwhacker as a basis for an artifact weenie deck.

I'm wondering what other stuff will be coming out though to possibly compliment this crazy combo! :)

All I'd be needing is a way to discard unwanted Mox's in the hand lol

September 5, 2010 2:18 a.m.

well i think poison is perfectly logical, if anyone is familiar with any DnD mechanics, try Melf's Acid Arrow anything acid deals poison damage and DnD is another wizards game with many key designers that work both games, and acid would slowly kill golems and creatures with metallic parts like....EVERYONE ON THE PLAIN!!! as for an artifact plains walker, yes and no, Karth (not karn although i think they are the same) will be colorless but not have an artifact sub type slimier to tezzeret.

September 5, 2010 2:34 a.m.

and a quick not for story line, glissa is not, nor will she ever be a plains walker, in the final battle with memnarch she died and her spark transfered to slobad because of the mycosynth. slobad became a plains walker but had karn drain the powers of plains walker from him to re populate the plain with all of the souls. also, no one is from mirrodin, their souls were trapped there by memnarch, in his attempt to become a plains walker like his creator, Karn. the plain is actually a machine built by karn to make plains walkers and was named something else(i cant remember right now) but was later re-named by the warden memnarch. karn(who i thing will be renamed koth for what ever reason) is a golem with the might stone and weak stone for eyes, thease are the same stones that fused into urza's eye sockets making him into a plains walker, karn has most of urza's memory and conciseness as well as a few other peoples. i think that urza WIL make an appearance as karn or at least koth as he was the creator of the plain(none of the other people in karn had the knowledge to build such a big and complex artifact.

karn was made to travel time, built as a probe and given Xantcha's heart stone allowing him to think independently. teferi instructed karn of the world, and as stated he is master of time related spells, later tought by Jhoira who named him karn meaning "mighty"in the phyrexian invasion Karn united with Urza and Gerrard. When Gerrard placed Urza's powerstone eyes, the Mightstone and Weakstone, into Karn, the Legacy released a wave of white mana, destroying the Phyrexians and defeating Yawgmoth. While the two humans were killed, the powerstones turned Karn into the first -- and, so far as is known, only -- artificial planeswalker

Three hundred years after the events of the Phyrexian Invasion, Karn returned to Dominaria at the request of Jhoira to aid her in sealing the time rifts tearing the multiverse apart. While attempting to close the rift over Tolaria, having travelled back in time to accomplish it during the Invasion itself, a corruption began to take hold of his mind. Sensing this, Karn proceeded to planeswalk throughout the Blind Eternities so he would not be followed across the multiverse - protecting any foolish enough to follow him from a monster of his own creation. Karn's current status and whereabouts are unknown. until the mirrodin block ended.
