Ok so this just happened at my school, where me and my friends play magic. Me and my friend traded 2 temple gardens and 2 banishing lights for a Foil polukranos. Before that I traded the shocklands off another guy he guy who traded me the temple gardens said he wanted to trade back the Rise of the dark realms I gave him for them. Me and the guy with Polukranos said that we forgot. Then a couple days later another friend told the dark realms guy we didnt forget, and we were banned. Because the one who dobbed said what we did is illegal and we should be jailed... wtf

It just sounds like a series of bad trades that led to a ripped-off player who lost value.

What exactly were you banned from exactly? This sounds like either a playgroup dispute, or some other guy who was looking for trouble.

How can you be banned from playing Magic? If you were banned from a playgroup, just find a new one. You'd be surprised at the amount of Magic players out there

So basically you ripped off another player by giving him a bulk-mythic for 2 staple-lands and now you're mad because he doesn't want to play with you anymore? facepalm

July 25, 2014 3:26 a.m.

FalloutCat says... #10

Putrefy, he wanted the Rise of the dark realms and he offered the shocklands, now he wants them back so he can copy my friends Selesnya deck. Also theres no other playgroup at my school, and the nearest gamestore with a playgroup is an hour away.

Stuff like this tends to happen a lot from my experience. Usually it happens because there are new players who don't check card prices before agreeing to trades and they just assume that mythics are worth multiple rares. I play at my local college and if I see someone who I don't recognize trading I always offer to use the MTG app on my cell to price check for them so they don't get ripped.

Now if you knew before hand that this guy was new or just stupid and took advantage of him that is really unfortunate and turns a lot of players off, one bad experience from a trade can keep some from ever playing again or keep others from wanting to ever play with you again. If you want to try and make amends I would suggest opening your binder and letting the guy you traded the lands for pick cards worth the price of the lands - the price of the cards you previously traded him. If your worried about being "banned" then this is probably the best way to get "unbanned".

The guy who wanted the mythic was the first one to play magic, and he considers himself the best and the leader of our group. He's just gonna say "Piss off" If I try anything.

xlaleclx says... #13

You still gave someone 25% value on a trade. It doesn't sound to me like you informed him on the price difference when you traded.

July 25, 2014 3:39 a.m.

FalloutCat says... #14

He knew the prices. He offered the temple gardens. He asked me to trade the rise.

Even if he tells you to piss off, you at least made an attempt to make amends. And it could sway the others to still play with you, regardless of whether he considers himself the leader of the group or not if you try to make amends and he refuses the burden is no longer on you its on him for being dumb and the others should see that.

you guys just need to be aware of what your doing in the first place. The initial trade should have probably never happened. Even if he wanted the Rise of the Dark Realms ,I highly doubt he forced you to take 2x Temple Garden when you let him know that you were trading a $1 bulk mythic for his land staple that is $12. At least, it sounds like you got a little of your own medicine because the guy who traded you the foil Polukranos ripped you off pretty much as bad as your ripped off the first guy.

July 25, 2014 3:51 a.m.

xlaleclx says... #17

You should just go back and take back all of those trades... foil Polukranos is worth as much as 1 temple garden...

None of you guys should be allowed to trade :(

FalloutCat says... #18

I told him it wasn't fair, but he said he would only do it if I took the temple gardens.

July 25, 2014 4:09 a.m.

Then that's on him. If he's mad that he messed up, it's his fault.

Just find another playgroup, even if that is the only one at your school. Once a trade is done, it's done, you can't really undo a trade unless everybody involved agrees to do so, otherwise, something will get lost.

If I were in that situation, I'd just carry on playing, you paid money for those cards, nobody except yourself (and maybe parents) has the authority to 'ban' you from using them. If the 'first guy to start Magic/gym leader/final boss/whatever' decides to tell you to piss off, just ignore him and play on with the others.

This. You didn't do anything wrong and don't have to participate in silly drama.

This is a posterchild story for why I have a pretty systematic policy for most trades of going by TCGplayer median value no matter what. It isn't perfect. Prices change over time, people change their minds about how much they like a card. In the end, though, if it was TCGplayer median at the time of trade, there is no reason for anyone to feel that they were "taken advantage of".

If he was committed to being retarded about the exchange, then that's on him. Get a new playgroup that has fewer dumbasses in it this time around.

Reminds me a lot of when I traded my Elspeth Tirel and Ajani Goldmane for a playset of Gravetiller Wurm and an Elderscale Wurm when I first started...

Bad trades happen. If this guy's being a jabroni, just don't play with him, tell him to piss off, and keep playing with your other friends. Don't let this guy be a doucher to you and get away with it. If he complains about you playing with your other friends, tell him to quit being a little bitch.

A little bit of harsh language goes a long way.

By the way, nothing you did was illegal by any means. All's fair in love and Magic. If he doesn't own the property that you play in, he has zero say in banning you from it.

I have made bad trades both ways. Most of the time when people make a bad trade it is because they want a card more than what they are giving up. When Theros (I think) came out, I traded a Mogis, God of Slaughter for a Phenax, God of Deception after the prerelease where I had taken third and won a few packs and opened that as a prize. Why? Because I wanted Phenax for a deck I was dying to build. When I got home I saw that there was a $5 dollar (at the time) price difference, and the other guy knew it. Did I go back next week and bitch and cry about it? No, I took the loss, made my deck, and went on with it. What we are dealing with here is a lack of maturity, plain and simple. Tell him to grow up and grow a pair.

July 25, 2014 10:45 a.m.

So there is another part to this, what you did wasn't illegal. You weren't stealing from him although the guy who traded away the Temple Gardens may feel that way. Both parties agreed to the trade and nothing was forced. The one guy is just super salty that he made a shitty trade.
