does this see play anywhere?

Does Extirpate see play in any decks anywhere? I mean it is conditional with the card needing to be in their graveyard and them running multiples of it but I still could see this card being very useful because it hits everything except BASIC lands.

If you're worried about decks with a one or two-card combo (Splinter Twin , Scapeshift ) or a specific card that, if they don't have access to it, will screw them (Tron lands, possibly Snapcaster Mage for control decks), then you can play Extirpate . Extirpate is advantaged in that it's uncounterable, while Surgical Extraction costs less, so take your pick if you want to take away access to an important card. Make sure you can get cards into the graveyard with Liliana of the Veil or discard spells.

Outside of Modern, some Legacy decks will fold to you Extirpate ing their Show and Tell or Natural Order or something. There, the uncounterability is probably much more relevant than Surgical Extraction .

ok well I just recently got one basically for free. I saw that it's actually worth a couple dollars but a search on mtgtop8 only came up with 3 decks that had it in the main board in the last 2 years. So i wasn't sure how to value it in a trade. I didn't know if it's price came from actually seeing play in modern or legacy or if it was just printed in a small set that didn't get opened a lot.

I use it in my 8Rack Sideboard if that counts for anything.

It's ballsy to use a card like that main deck. You basically want to be building some kind of resource denial deck thats win condition is ragequit.
I use Surgical Extraction maindeck in my grixis delver build. Its kind of janky though lol

I can see how it would be more of sideboard card, but with things like Thoughtseize , Inquisition of Kozilek , Abrupt Decay , Liliana of the Veil running around I wasn't sure if there were any decks that utilized a card like this. Seems like forcing a discard and then removing the rest of them from the deck can be very powerful and shut down some deck. A deck like that might be restricted by the meta i guess.

The problem I run into is most decks are so robust with so many threats that choosing one cog often has a minimal impact.
Obviously there are decks that this isn't true though.

Extirpate and the like are conditional hosers against combo decks. In legacy you are looking at Reanimator and you could use it as surprise sideboard tech against stuff like UR Painter that uses Intuition and some form of recursion.
Even then it is less reliable than Tormod's Crypt or Rest in Piece

I have seen a mill deck that runs 4 Extirpate and 4 Surgical Extraction main board to help with the mill plan and ruin combo decks (and eldrazi)

Played a guy who ran 4 of both cards in a mill deck......best mill deck I'd ever seen.

Lots of decks with B will use it for Tron matchups in combination with some form of land destruction. Most people prefer Surgical Extraction since it can be used for free though.
