Recent Redesign - Need to Know Proper Stack Order

Deck Help forum

I recently redesigned my deck - Protection to be more interactive in the mid-game. Early game was always enchantments and creatures with protection to deter being picked on while late game was always field wipes then big beater angels being unblockable via the same protection mechanic.

However, when I redesigned my mid-game I added a bunch of the exiling creatures like Fiend Hunter and added Containment Priest and Hallowed Moonlight to make sure what I exiled stayed exiled when I boardwiped.

I think though that this creates either some stack issues with other cards I have like Field of Souls and was hoping there might be a way to stack the triggers so I get the spirit tokens but also get the creatures exiled to stay exiled. I also saw maybe some non-bos with stuff like Luminarch Ascension, Dawn of Hope, The Book of Exalted Deeds, Devout Invocation. If so, is there a way around that? I know Hallowed Moonlight only lasts until the end of turn so isn't that big of a deal but having the Containment Priest out later might cause an issue with those cards. I was thinking maybe I could flicker or put the priest back to hand or something so I could use those cards.

What do you guys think?

Having read this but not looked at the deck (i don’t play EDH), a couple of thing stand out:

  • if you boardwipe, Containment Priest presumably isn’t on the field anymore, so its ability won’t take effect and creatures trapped by Fiend Hunter will return.

  • both Containment Priest and Hallowed Moonlight prevent a creature from entering the battlefield, so that even if they put creatures into the grave instead of exile, neither would trigger Field of Souls. For Field to trigger, the creature must have been on the battlefield, then put from there into the grave. None of what you’ve suggested here gets close to that.

  • seeing your list of “non-bos”, i suspect you’re deck is trying to do far too many different things (though no idea if that is normal for your format).

Nah, the point of Containment Priest is to flash it in when the death triggers happen. Same with Hallowed Moonlight.

I think you are missing that point with what I am trying to do. I know there is a way to manipulate triggers on the stack, I just can't remember how to do it.

I have Fiend Hunter x4 effects and a Field of Souls out. Say then I boardwipe with Day of Judgment. Normally that would put my Fiend Hunter type creatures in the graveyard, I'd get 4 spirit tokens, and the 4 creatures that were exiled by the Fiend Hunters would return to the battlefield.

I want to then Flash in or Instant cast Hallowed Moonlight in response to something on the stack to prevent those exiled creatures from returning to the field.

When multiple triggers happen at the same time, they go on the stack in APNAP order and a player who controls multiple triggers gets to put them on the stack in the order of their choosing.

Objects on the stack resolve one at a time, with a round of priority in between each thing resolving.

To accomplish what you are wanting to do, you will put all of the Fiend Hunter effect LTB triggers on the stack first and then the Field of Souls triggers. You allow all of the Field of Souls triggers to resolve. Then you cast your Containment Priest or Hallowed Moonlight. Your Containment Priest or Hallowed Moonlight will resolve before the Fiend Hunter effect LTBs and the creatures will be exiled instead of entering the battlefield.

I didn't look too closely at the deck past seeing that it was mono-white since I don't really have the time to do a deep dive on it at this moment, so some of my suggestions may already be in there or may not be what you are wanting to do.

To help with the nonbos there are cards like Flickerform or Flickerwisp that could help with Containment Priest. Flickerform may be especially fun since you run Fiend Hunter effects. You can put it on one of the Fiend Hunters and then respond to the ETB with a Flickerform activation putting the linked LTB on top of the ETB returning nothing and then exiling a creature forever. You could also exile the Priest with one of your Fiend Hunter effects if you have a high enough density of them.

Eerie Interlude and Ghostway might also be fun includes. Not only can they remove a Containment Priest until end step so that you can make tokens. They can also let you completely dodge your own Wraths.

One last note. In both my previous response and this one "Fiend Hunter effects" refers strictly to things that are two abilities. An ETB and then a line break and a LTB. Banisher Priest effects that are a single ETB that says "When...enters the battlefield exile...until" act differently and will not produce the same results.

Thank you! I'll be referring to this thread when I take a look at the deck again.

Do keep in mind that at least Containment Priest does specify nontoken creatures, and will not interact with your Field of Souls at all. Hallowed Moonlight is the one you need to time right.
