What sould I do about Chromium, the Mutable cEDH?

Commander Deck Help forum

I know it seems early, but I'm just wondering about such ideas now I've had it with Boros in cEDH... I was thinking of a field control deck, but I'd like some thoughts, & stuff to put in the deck to make it viable for thus. Obviously I have all 5 standard counterspells & Not of This World would be an honorable mention for this, but does anyone have any suggestions? Sorry for the rushed post in case it seems so, I was going off my computer anyway...

Thanks for any ideas. ^-^

Aside from wanting to play Chromium, there's no real reason to play him in cEDH.

Obviously I was referring to the new Chromium, but Oh well...

Other opinions? Any reason not to play him?

Chromium, the Mutable is a super unusual little card. Flash is great; not being countered is great; flying is great. It's last ability... Very unusual, and I'm sure someone is going to find a way to abuse it.

But I agree with TheDevicer--I doubt they will be abusing him in cEDH. He might have a place as a finisher in a casual control deck, but there are better Esper control commanders for competitive play. Perhaps there's some potential for a Voltron build using unblockable commander damage, but Chromium costs a lot of mana for an unblockable 1/1, and isn't in Green to mitigate the mana cost. Further, Voltron is not the most competitive of strategies to begin with. One could try something interesting with Madness, except there just are not enough great madness cards to be competitive.

He'll be a fun little card for casual EDH, but I don't think he'll be making waves competitively.

Playing control, outside of stax, is incredibly challenging in EDH regardless of your level of competitiveness. Savvy players will recognize they'll have a hard time against your deck if they don't take you out first. It's practically impossible to 1v3 in EDH. On top of that, 1-for-1 removal is inherent card disadvantage in EDH, so a lot of your typical control tools give you less value than you'd expect. It's for this reason that all decks in competitive EDH that have heavy control elements use combos as their finishers. It's just more reliable. It's damn hard to clock people in the face with a giant flyer while also avoiding dying and getting comboed out.

Even if you REALLY wanted to play esper in cEDH and win via damage, Zur does this better as he's a toolbox general with the ability to construct a suite of enchantments that protect him better than Newmium's ability does. In addition, he can fetch out some damn important card draw. Basically Zur's more versatile, comes out earlier, and can be safer if left unchecked.

All in all, Chromium is entirely outclassed in cEDH. Like I said, outside of REALLY liking him and trying to force him, there's no real reason to play him. Well, I guess Zur has the downside of having to allocate slots in the 99 for enchantments to make him work, but still. Even for pure control, Oloro's better.

BMHKain im pretty sure TheDevicer knew which chromium you meant.

I see. Very well. I'd like to use a new school version of an Elder Dragon from Core 2019, but if Chromium eats the dust in both cases, any other suggestions?

your best bet would be the new nicol bolas.

Nicol Bolas, the Ravager  Flip is probably your best bet, but I'm not sure any of them are viable in cEDH.

  • Chromium, the Mutable has already been discussed.

  • Palladia-Mors, the Ruiner just is not that exciting of a card. Her evergreen abilities are fine, and often having hexproof is nice, but she doesn't really do anything other than "here is a 6/6 beater."

  • Vaevictis Asmadi, the Dire - seems like a fun ability for a chaos-deck, but that's a super casual strategy and has no place in cEDH. After all, you can never be sure your opponents will not get something better out of the deal.

  • Nicol Bolas, the Ravager  Flip - I've seen some people saying this is a great card. I'm not sold yet. It has Blue, so there's some potential for blinking him for forced discard, but lack of White hurts that strategy some. As I discussed with you on a different thread, the fact opponents get to choose the card they discard is really problematic, since they can just dump their worst card (or something they want in the graveyard), and his transform ability is a tad expensive to activate.

Hmmm... well, Grixis is big right here so far... I guess I should wait to decide until the Bant Elder Dragon (Whatever the name is...) is revealed...

Yeah, I did. My original post was a bit short to the point it could even come across as rude. I typed up a bit more to explain my point of view.

No worries, you weren't being rude. Though if none of the re:Elder Dragons are viable in this format, I myself will still wonder what to do for cEDH...

I'll just focus on my other blog until further notice...

they still have to reveal new versions of Arcades Sabboth and Ugin, the Spirit Dragon as it is now confirmed that ugin and bolas are twins.

Hmmm... A new Ugin? You know what? If that is either a flip Walker (& Not just the new Bolas...), I'll probably consider it. Otherwise, I wonder what he might do for Superfriends (Not cEDH; I know.), or if anyone can use him in Brawl... (Wastes are done, & Deserts are gone after the next rotation...)

When the elder dragons take over cEDH, NewChromia will be the only dragon who can survive the Crux of Fates everyone will be running no matter which mode they choose. heh heh. Better pick up your Crux of Fates now while they are still cheap.

Maro confirmed we're not getting an Ugin and Arcades was just spoiled. They're all bad for cEDH. Sorry.

I see. Let's just close this. Even Bolas probably blows here. Damn that Ugin is just as dead as The Three... >_>

Let's be , Chromium is easily a casual commander. The mana cost is very high for a deck without green and he definetly attests to a voltron build. I do however think cards like Butcher's Cleaver are really cool.

Not that it matters; I'm doing a cBrawl deck of it currently; but I also have other projects to deal with...
