Kruphix, God of Horizons counterspells like syncopate?

Commander Deck Help forum

well i have a Kruphix, God of Horizons commander deck and atm i am using Plasm Capture + Spell Rupture but would it be wize to add more? i am thinking about Counterspell + Syncopate would be a good choice. this is ofcourse because as long as i empty my pool before the untap step i am never wasting mana by keeping my lands untapped.

the dissadvantage of this is that this could decrease the chance of me drawing something that i can use to speed up my own board building. (which i already am having issues with when i draw lands turn 4-7, the turns i don't need them. and have no card draw in hand. not too many lands, just bad shuffler)

First off, if you're going to run counterspells in your deck, you should figure out if you're running them defensively or offensively. This will dictate how many you run and the kind you want to run.

Generally you want ~4-6 for a defensive build and they should be as cheap as possible. Stuff like Swan Song, Dispel, Pact of Negation.

For an offensive build, you're looking at 8+ counterspells (IMO). But even with Kruphix as your commander, there are so many good counterspells that you can run without having to go down the Syncopate route. Counterspell, Dissipate, Voidslime, Negate, even Arcane Denial are all good. You should be able to play your entire counterspell package without having to pay more than 3 for any one (unless you add Mindbreak Trap).

i'm not sure what you mean by "empty my pool before the untap step". your mana pool wouldnt have mana in it at that time. there is nothing to empty.

also not sure what you mean by "wasting mana by keeping my lands untapped". how is that a waste? how do any of the spells you mentioned stop that "waste"?

but to answer your question of whether or not you should run more counterspells, the answer is yes. 2 counterspells isn't a whole lot in a 100 card deck, and for a UG deck its by far your biggest source of "removal".

well by not wasting mana ever i mean that after turn 5 Kruphix means i basically have a manabank since his ability stops my mana from dissapating. so i mean that as long as i tap my lands before the untap stap nothing goes to waste. this means that i can keep all my lands untapped for the turn and it doesn't matter if i had to play a counterspell or not because i can just use the mana of the turn that i "missed" in the next turn.

as far as nonenchantment-removal is concerned... well i do have a Rapid Hybridization but agreed that it's a good point. thanks for the feedback i, think i will try a few more counterspells
