Is 3 color possible on a 50$ budget?

Commander Deck Help forum

Starting out a new deck, kinda wanting to make Derevi but can't decide if I could put together a good enough land base (until I run into more cash). Maybe since I'm in green I could get enough basic land searchers and mana dorks? Thoughts?

its easier in green, since you have stuff like Tempt with Discovery where you can search out try lands or the panoramas

There are a lot of cheap dual lands out there, so it's doable, but advisable? Probably not if you want it to keep up the pace with non budget stuff. You'll be stalled an entire turn often enough by doing that. For causal stuff it is just fine though

@Qolorful

I'm mostly casual. Was looking to eventually make this deck into a full blown competitive deck. But that's not for awhile down the road.

@Wurmlover

Makes sense I'll have to get that out of my 4 color deck Precon I'm not using anymore.

budget mana base in casual is pretty straight forward. I find these videos useful for mana bases in general: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifig4xSp0kA&t=156s, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UleH4wxzONA, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDc4v7sDaQY&t=72s, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DSddyFCqPk. my Divine Decree deck is an example of a decent very budget 3 color mana base, it dosen't do a good job of following the video though.

Honestly, is there a reason you want to stop playing your precon for the cost of a precon? Like, I would advise just saving money and getting better cards. $100 decks are much more feasible than $50 to make, and you'll be happier playing it. I would just hang onto the precon for now until you're ready to invest a bit more if you want to play 3 colors.

@Bhaal666 I'll be sure to look at those

@buildingadeck oh Precon? I'm planning on making it from scratch. I'd leave the mana base alone if it was from the Precon but since I'm building from the ground up I'm trying to decide if I can make a good mana base without spending most of the 50$ budget.

It's possible, I've done it. But you should lean on green, and mana rocks. helps a lot. Also a number of players in 3 color are "afraid" of basic lands, don't be, and in all honesty the difference to a shock land and a guildgate isn't as relevant in a casual match where no one is doing anything turn 1 (and very rarely turn 2) if they use the shock land or fast land turn one and play nothing and you use a tapped land you're both in the same boat anyway. Just don't keep hands without mana fixing and/or the more than two tapped/bounce lands. OK the Tri lands are awesome, USE THEM, Command Tower, Commander's Sphere and Darksteel Ingot are amazing USE THEM TOO, The guild signet's are great little rocks, Yavimaya Coast and it's cycle are fast and cheap, they don't have all the color combos thought, and finally use Evolving Wilds and his brother Terramorphic Expanse. They aren't perfect but if you're missing a color these are a life saver, Especially if you have no green.

Trust me, it's harder and I do seriously recommend waiting until you have a 100$ budget at least. But if you are set in doing this, I highly recommend you follow my advice, I almost never run into mana problems using these little tidbits. Nevertheless I wish you luck.

EDH doesn't have to be expensive...even 3+ colors. Here's my take on Derevi bird tribal Bird is the Word - Derevi $40 Budget Tribal. You can check out the rest of my $40 budget commanders too that might give you some ideas.

Like many have said, it really depends on your playgroup. I can't run any 3 color decks without having expensive shock lands (in any format) in my playgroup because ill simply have a 1 turn disadvantage which is a big handicap.

@MoonTurtle7 thanks for the advice! I'll be sure to follow it besides the waiting part. I have enough cards around to make up about half the deck (supreme verdict and cyclonic rift being main ones) so I can focus a good bit on the mana base while not blowing my whole budget.

@hosshughes when I'm out of work I'll be sure to look up your decks!

@solarPULSAR we aren't to competitive so I think I'll be fine. My Arjun wheels deck wins a good bit w/o fetches or shocks if that tells you how competitive we are lol. Thanks for the advice!

"Makes sense I'll have to get that out of my 4 color deck Precon I'm not using anymore."

This is what you said. My point was, just keep playing the precon until you can afford to invest more in a decent build. Otherwise, building a 3 color mana base seems like it will be subpar.

@buildingadeck

My apologies, I thought you meant I was planning to or already had purchased the Evasive Maneuvers precon, not the anti-black precon I already had. The only thing is I don't enjoy the deck to much which is why I was focusing on making a new one.
