Paradox Engine Replacements —July 23, 2019
Paradox Engine is banned.
This is too bad for us, it was one of the best cards in the deck. Finding the right replacement might take some time. I think the top contenders are:
1) Aetherflux Reservoir - this is a powerful card that helps the storm plan and combos with Bolas's Citadel.
2) Mindcrank - this is a weaker card but combos with Bloodchief Ascension.
3) Basalt Monolith + Rings of Brighthearth - this is an infinite mana combo; while the pieces aren't great by themselves, they're not bad. Possibly Mesmeric Orb should go in with Basalt Monolith, too.
Other changes:
Vilis, Broker of Blood is fantastic. It doesn't quite win the game by itself but it gets pretty close. I think this is better than Sire Of Insanity, although both are good.
Plunge into Darkness is part Impulse and part Tainted Pact, and also should be game-winning with Vilis. I think this can go in over Finale of Promise which is kind of win-more.
@Lord_Nottingham, I'd go for more relevant interaction. Depends on the kinds of combos, but I'd add the Red Elemental Blast and Nihil Spellbomb , assuming the combos are GY or backed by blue-decks. If you're not playing against green-based decks then you can drop a couple pyroclasms. If you're in pods of 3 combo decks, try to play politics and get them to help stop each other. If they're all uninteractive linear combo decks... I guess I'd try to play another deck or (better yet) play with other opponents. ;)
I don't think the deck has much synergy with a stax build; it hoses the storm plan in particular. I guess you could drop all the rituals and Bonus Round stuff, and add in stax artifacts... but there aren't actually much good stax cards in Black, and in Red it's... there's some hatebears but that doesn't really apply here.
You might be interested in my actual CEDH Stax Deck, The Great Radhaggro. It's very good against combo decks.

@WERTPRO: you know, there isn't a whole lot in Modern Horizons for this deck. There's no RB land, we already had a RB talisman, there's not much for a storm archetype in the whole set, or reanimator for that matter.
So, I haven't actually seen anything that looks good for Xantcha. :(

Yea I'm really curious what to replace for this deck, I'm wondering what about Aetherflux Reservoir to combo with Top and Citadel?

Do you have any recommendations for tuning this to a more combo based meta? Would a stx version work?
