Building an aggressive bigger red deck in THB. Big red popped up in pioneer as a formidable meta deck, and this deck is trying to be a standard version of that.

The game plan is simple: Play your cards on curve as best as you can. Embercleave and Torbran, thane of redfell will close out the game.

Anax, Hardened in the Forge provides a surprising amount of resiliency, especially if Torbran, Thane of Red Fell drops on the board after a sweep or removal to make the tokens more of a threat. Ox of Agonas provides gas for ages in longer games.

I'm not convinced Runaway Steamkin is the best two drop, but it does get large and provide extra mana in many games. I am not currently aware of a better two drop option, but it does get us to Ox of Agonas quicker.

After playing with the deck a bit on magic arena in the new format, I can report that the deck has been performing well. I was able to climb to platinum relatively quickly this far and plan to continue trying to climb.

Embercleave is a really strong card and downright wins games as early as turn 4. In this early unrefined meta, we can really take advantage of the slower midrange or control decks that fumble around early too much.

One popular play pattern I see in control or late midrange match ups is Anax, Hardened in the Forge turn 3 while on the play into an opponent's turn 4 sweeper. It's usually punished by a turn 4 Torbran, thane of redfell of our own and a bunch of Satyr tokens.

Until the meta settles, I am content with the list for now.

One argument I run into is why not just play Gruul aggro. I think both decks are potent aggro decks and have an embercleave finisher. I prefer the all red version since we have no mana issues, can get extra value from Runaway Steamkin pretty quickly, and use Anax, Hardened in the Forge optimally. Edgewall Innkeeperl provides good value in gruul aggro adventure lists, but we have Ox of Agonas to provide some card advantage in a different way late game.
