This is a modified version of the Mono-red Dark Ascension Event Deck. I am new to the game..however I am a regular at FNM in Tampa. The modifications that have already been made to this deck were suggested by seasoned players at FNM however, I know it can be better. PLEASE make suggestions! ;-)
*Also....in addition to the mods I need to make this to deck to legal for the next block, I am going to make all of my mountains foil! Shiny! <3 <3 <3
Goblin Gaveleer seems pretty weak considering there aren't any ways to take advantage of its ability.
Reckless Brute is an example of a creature that gives poor return on investment. It is extremely easy to kill because it only has 1 toughness - even tokens can take it out and then you're down three mana and a creature.
Flayer of the Hatebound doesn't seem to make sense in this deck. Only it and Hound of Griselbrand have undying. You should also be careful about including high-cost cards in a mono-red aggro deck. They're dead drops until late turns and if the game progresses to the state where you can cast them, you probably lost.
Although they will be rotating out soon, card:Chandra's Phoenix and Shrine of Burning Rage are decent aggro cards. Same with Stormblood Berserker and Hero of Oxid Ridge , the latter of which is surprisingly relevant in the token-heavy metas of most FNMs.
For consistency, drawing the cards you need when you want to draw them, decks are generally exactly 60 cards. Since you have 64, most people will initially recommend that you take out 4 cards.
The next question is which cards? To begin with I see some cards, like Goblin Gaveleer , that don't quite fit the deck. While Goblin Gaveleer does work well with Goblin Grenade , you probably aren't going to get much use out of its abilities; Gaveleer becomes more powerful if you have equipment cards in the deck, and alas - you have none!
Here are some alternative goblin-related cards, should you decide to stick with that theme: card:Krenko's Command, Goblin Chieftain , Spikeshot Elder , Goblin Wardriver , etc. Aside from Krenko, Mob Boss most of the unmentioned goblins suck.
In mono-red burn decks, you usually don't have cards that cost more than 4 mana. This allows you to cast things quickly, outpacing your opponents, and have a relatively low land count (in favor of more spells). Because of this I would recommend against Flayer of the Hatebound and Volcanic Geyser , due to their mana investment. After that you can probably even take out 1 mountain.
Reckless Brute is kind of a bad card.
If you like goblins you can took a look at my goblin deck. I have won a tournament before with it. Kuldotha Rebrith! FTW Otherwise I would go with what they said above and take out the gaveleer and the higher drop cards
@Human_Rogue_21: While Thunderous Wrath is a great idea, the rest, bar the Curse, are all pretty expensive to get hold of. I am assuming that this deck was made from the stance of a new player, seeing as most of the cards are commons/uncommons and from the latest/previous core set. Anyway, back to the deck.
If you can get it, I really recommend Flames of the Firebrand , as it is very useful early on.
You could consider getting some draw cards to draw into more burn spells. Dangerous Wager is a good idea when you have no cards left in hand, as burn decks tend to cast so many spells quickly they run out and have no hand.
@pookypuppy6: You Do Have A valid Point... For A Beginner This Would Be Hard...
Hmmm... I'm trying to think of other suggestions.
Concerning Flayer of the Hatebound , while it is pretty cool, it is expensive in CMC. I don't like suggesting rares to newer players as they can be trickier to come by, but see what is around that might fit the deck instead of the flayer. Things that come to mind include Archwing Dragon and Firewing Phoenix ; the problem with those suggestions id you already have a few rares that have a converted mana cost of 4. Any other suggestions for this slot, peeps?
Concerning the Reckless Brute s and the Goblin Gaveleer s, there is probably something better that can fit this space. You can either swap 'em for more burn spells (more Pillar of Flame s, for example), or different creatures/creature-spawning stuff (Forge Devil s, for example, or maybe even card:Krenko's Command to support your grenades). It can often be good to experiment with different things.
Ashmouth Hound ? I Have A deck:ur-counter-burn-19-08-12-1 Deck And It Works Quite Well... If Your Looking For Ideas, Check It Out!
