Creature (1)

Instant (1)

Synergy based deck based around getting early under costed giant flyers out that are too big for most early removal and riding them to victory with various nasty tricks.

Early giant creatures are...

  • Ornithopter/Darksteel Citadel/Springleaf Drum into Ensoul Artifact on turn two.

  • Springleaf drum on turn one followed by Ornithopter and tapping that to get the third mana needed to play Illusory Angel on turn 2.

  • Battlefield Thaumaturge plus Hour of Need can turn a great number of creatures into 4/4 flyers early in the game, especially with the ramp from Springleaf Drum.

Nasty tricks include...

  • Stubborn Denial - Many of our creatures are so huge they demand specialized three mana removal. Our creatures high strength means that Stubborn Denial becomes an unconditional counterspell for just one mana.

  • Icy Blast - very strong synergy with Battlefield Thaumaturge, allowing you to tap down every single creature on the field for just one blue mana at instant speed. If done before they declare attackers, that stops them from attacking and opens them up to being attacked by you in return. Again, with our creatures high strength we get the Ferocious bonus on this, so we can actually tap down an opponents entire board for two turns, for one mana. I would play more of these, but it is situational and with the card selection in the deck it makes more sense to have a singleton.

  • Battlefield Thaumaturge + Hour of Need opens up quite a few nasty tricks in itself, since it can be done at instant speed. This means you can use it to upgrade creatures in response to removal spells or to create a surprise giant blocker to kill attacking creatures. Thaumaturge has such glorious synergy with Hour of Need, it makes it very cheap to make a huge army of 4/4 flyers out of nowhere. If done at the end of an opponents turn, it's often just a case of untapping and killing them.

A lot of cards in this deck are weak on their own and rely on synergy to work at all so getting the right cards is important. It also makes mulliganing very important. Having the right cards is more important than the number of cards you have.

Updates Add

Updated the deck for DTK, which is to say I added a play set of Anticipate and adjusted the numbers of other cards to reflect the improved ability to dig through the deck.

Jeskai Elder replaces Frost Walker as with the card selection from Anticipate, the deck is no longer as desperate to get an early Ferocious creature. Jeskai Elder also benefits from the 25 non creature spells in the deck to trigger prowess and the looting ability is very useful in finding the right combo pieces. Also, since tokens are very popular right now, two toughness is vastly better than one.

Illusory Angel is down to three since you never want to see more than one in your opening hand, the second is unlikely to get cast. Icy Blast is also down to three, since again we don't want to start with two and with Anticipate and Jeskai Elder we have improved ability to find it when we need it.

Force Away is simply the lowest impact card in the deck and we're less reliant on the conditional looting ability it provides so I think we can cut two of these without losing much.
