Nice deck!

This looks pretty similar to a regular Yawgmoth, Thran Physician combo deck.

Maybe add some Blood Artists or some Zulaport Cutthroats, and maybe even Chord of Calling or Finale of Devastation?

Hey, thanks for the feedback. while these decks are very similar, This deck tries to leverage Retribution of the Ancients with undying creatures and sac outlets. Because of this, these decks have a few key differences:

  • This deck tries to get more value from undying creatures, so much so that it plays other sac outlets. This gives the deck more mobility as an aggro deck than GB Yawgmoth.

  • Yawgmoth you can see plays more mana dorks because it has the space, and it allows the deck to play cards like Chord of Calling and Finale of Devastation. This approach may be better because it lets the deck effectively have more undying creatures in addition to finding the combo/silver bullet cards, but it is slower than this deck. Because this deck does not run mana dorks like GB Yawgmoth, tutors do not make much sense because you cannot find say your Yawgmoth until you draw 6 or 7 lands.

  • This deck is not a combo deck first. Value from Retribution of the Ancients is often overlooked.

In short, GB Yawgmoth is more of a combo value deck with the ability to be a toolbox deck while this deck is more of an aggro tempo style deck with the ability to combo. While GB Yawgmoth is centered around getting value with Yawgmoth, this deck is focused on attacking always having a good board state. Just because the decks have similar cards and can do similar things, they are just different decks in the end.

Thanks for the feedback, its greatly appreciated!

So you mentioned in your post that no one else had built a deck like this, but that's not the case. It looks like you are trying to built Golgari Yawgmoth combo, and you almost got there, but came up with a suboptimal version of an already established archetype. Here is the deck for reference:

The deck stopped seeing play after Once Upon a Time was banned in Modern, but it still pops up occasionally without it. You still have 8 tutoring effects without OUaT, so the deck still works its just slower and less consistent.

This site is dumb, just Google Seth Manfield Golgari Yawgmoth and it will pop up.

ArchonBlue, I am aware of this decks existence. I would encourage you to read the primer. I have a section written about the difference between both of these decks in there.

I am not going to say that my list is better or worse than the yawgmoth decks, or that that the yawgmoth combo deck is bad (which it obviously isn't). I research all sorts of cards and decks to try to make the best deck possible, and yawgmoth combo served as a reference for refining this one. Unfortunately, because both of these decks appear to be similar, this deck is overshadowed by yawgmoth combo whenever I try to get opinions on the deck (as in no one would even talk about the cards in this deck, but rather just suggest I look at yawgmoth combo). I am perfectly fine with debating the differences between these decks and working out the issues this deck has, but in my opinion, to just say "this deck is better, just play this one" isn't really productive and doesnt facilitate discussion or debate. Much like those who work on the yawgmoth deck, taking this deck seriously would be greatly appreciated.

As for my post on the modern forum, I will be editing it in an attempt to make it more clear. My intentions for the post were to say that no one seemed to be actively working on a Retribution of the Ancients deck. I am at fault for not trying to guide the conversation for this deck as much as I should, not acknowledging the decks existence within my post, and for failing to mention that these decks, though similar, are not the same thing. I do not want to be actively distancing this deck from yawgmoth combo, but based on the direction of interactions with others about this deck has been going, I should be more vigilant about this.

As for the link you tried to add, I think that tappedout suppresses links to other websites like tcgplayer. I tried adding a link to the yawgmoth combo like you did when talking about the deck in my primer, but that didn't work either. I did find that a link to a stock list on tappedout, which does work.

In any event, Thank you for the comment. I know everyone who comments only have good intentions and want to help. If you want to discuss this deck further, I am more than glad too!

this looks cool

I've always liked Vorapede, but is it too high cmc for this deck?

Glad you like it! Unfortunately, Vorapede costs too much at five mana, especially when this deck really likes leaving up at least one mana for various spells.

Cards like Yawgmoth, Thran Physician and Geralf's Messenger, though very good, are pretty expencive to the deck as well. makes me wish there was another good undying creature and sac outlet at one or two mana. That would really put the deck over the top in my opinion.

Thanks for the comment!

Really great idea! I would definitely recommend Plagued Rusalka as a great Sac Outlet. Or Demonlord of Ashmouth as both Sac Outlet and Undying creat

Maybe you will like Gleancrawler too or Quest for the Gravelord which will release the token quick

Also I'd put Tragic Slip in place of Fatal Push

Hey, thanks for the comment.

Unfortunately these options are either too expencive (Gleancrawler), too inefficient (Plagued Rusalka costing 1 black mana to sacrifice something), or too conditional (Tragic Slip). The lost is pretty tight, and in my opinion what this deck could use the most is additional cards that function like Carrion Feeder by being a free sac outlet that gets +1/+1 counters, or another good undying creature at converted mana cost 2 or less.

Just as a note, I will not be using tappedout anymore. If you want to see more on the deck, check out my subreddit, r/UndyingRetributionMTG, where I will be more active and putting out new information on the deck.

Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth to help with manafixing?

zapyourtumor, thanks for the feedback. I've been away since mh2 has came out, so there is a lot of stuff that I'd like to test but havent had a chance yet. Im definately going to try yavimaya, it can help a lot with fixing in the right situations, but Im not optimistic it will fit right with the deck. Only testing will tell. Thanks for the suggestion!

Snowmen1 Would you be okay if I made a budget version of your deck using alot of the same creatures and idea. I also just want to see how much I could lower the price! Also really cool deck! Creatures not dying: Check| Golgari: Check |Coolness: Check.| :D

Snowmen1 says... #18

Of course! The core of the deck is very cheap, but unfortunately the mana is just terrible for a deck thats 2 colors, so a lot of the price is sunk into lands. Id be interested to see how you approach this problem.

Sideboard cards and other expencive pieces are for the most part replaceable for more budget friendly cards.

Looks to be a fairly budget friendly deck and is easily upgradable if need be. Good luck!

Nice build! Impressed that you finally foun a use for a card Retribution of the Ancients! But I hve a question: have you willingly decided not to include Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, or have you just forgotten about it? Because it just seems like a perfect fit for the deck. Anyways, great list!!!
