TWO CARDS SWAPPED! —Sept. 5, 2016

IN:

-Sylvan Advocate

-Eldritch Evolution

OUT:

-Scryb Ranger

-Harmonize

I have been trying Advocate for quite some time, but it's thanks to the user Austin_Smith_of_Cards if I finally decided to include it in my deck. I thank you a lot for your valuable opinion and for convincing me, it is an awesome card! Though Scryb Ranger let me have redundancy of the Quirion Ranger effect, animating lands into 3/3s is too much a sweet deal not to take it. Scryb was the only card that could have been taken out for it.

I don't think I need to explain why I put Eldritch Evolution in my deck, do I? But I'm pretty sad of taking out Harmonize: this card is amazing, seriously. If you're running a similar deck but on a budget, I urge you to use this card: it will never let you down. It's a green Rick Astley.

Hey I can't believe I found this deck again! I found an older cardlist on mtgcommander.net; I'm glad to see it with stuff from newer sets! The variation I've contructed is here: There's No Kill Like Overkill

If you have any budget-y suggestions, that would be much appreciated. Such as, in the older decklist, Abundance and Nissa's Pilgrimage are both listed. Are they still worth running, or are they outstripped by other cards?

As for commentary on the deck current iteration, I have one question for you: why no Sylvan Advocate? It is everything this deck wants it to be; it buffs your own manlands without increasing your opponents' like Earth Surge, it's a prime tutor target for Woodland Bellower if you're playing on curve, it has lategame value because it has a big body, and it's an Elf.

I could imagine you cutting Scryb Ranger for it, but almost nothing else; there's so much value everywhere!

Hi Austin_Smith_of_Cards! Sorry for answering only now, I just came back from holidays. Let's deal with each issue separately, shall we?

1) I'm very happy that you found my deck on mtgcommander.net! Sadly, I don't have time to both update the deck here and on that site: it's time consuming, and my spare time is very little due to College schedule and other stuff. The version of my deck that inspired you is an older one (heck, I think it is one of my first decklist ever!) And a lot of stuff happened since then, namely testing and testing and guess what? More testing.

2) About budget cards, I always encourage my friends who don't want to spend tons of money to find less expensive alternatives that yet remain viable; after all, we're talking about a multiplayer format, where the divide between expensive and on-budget decks grows smaller and smaller as the number of player increases (I believe that the perfect EDH game is a free for all between 6 players). Abundance and Nissa's Pilgrimage are still two great cheap (yet effective) options, but there are a lot of more cards out there! You can find below the description my personal log of updates and swap of cards; maybe you'll find some viable options among the cards that I chose to substitute. You could also just wait for some reprints: look for example at Burgeoning, who just got a reprint in Conspiracy 2: great, GREAT card in multi, and now its price will drop significantly. If you want some specific suggestion, feel free to ask :)

3) I've been thinking about Sylvan Advocate for some time. I think you're definitely right: it's a very interesting card in this deck; he improves Kamahl's ability significantly and he's good both on early and late game. The only drawback I've seen up to now is that it's not as good a topdeck as it would be in my mind, especially if I'm not allowed to cast my commander (too expensive due to commander taxes, an opponent used a Nevermore effect and so on). Scryb Ranger is the only card I could swap it for, but he's much more versatile, and can let me do ridiculous sheaningans with Gaea's Cradle and Kamahl's first ability. I'll try and test Advocate some more, as I'll wait for him to exit standard (thus lowering his price) before buying a foil version of it, anyway. Thank you for your much valuable opinion!
