How long until next rotation?

Standard forum

I am just now getting into competitive MTG play and I want to start attending FNM tournaments; but first, I need a competitive deck. I am looking to play in Standard format and I was wondering: would it be a good idea to just start building from the current block (Theros)? That would mean not taking any cards from the previous block into consideration. Even M14. I obviously know what a block is, but I am still confused on when they rotate out and how. If sets from the RTR block will still be legal for a while, I'll probably start considering cards from that block. But if not, I don't want to waste money on cards such as Voice of Resurgence if I won't be able to attend many tournaments using them.

I believe rotation is October. when we lose Return to Ravnica, and gain the first section of Khans of Tarkir block.

M15 will be released around July 12-13, and until October, M14 and M15 will both be legal in standard

So say I wanted to build a GW aggro deck. I wouldn't be wasting any time or money by going ahead and buying cards from Gatecrash and on?

Depends on how active you want to be with playing the deck.

It's not time to fully be wary of the rotation, it's just close enough to be mindful of what you want to build from scratch.

If you're remotely thinking of doing Modern, go ahead and invest in the Temple Garden s and Voice of Resurgence , as they are both staples in Pod, which currently sits at or near the top of Modern deck lists.

No, you misunderstood. When Kharns hits in September ALL of the ravnica block will rotate.

To sum all this up: sept 26 is when all control players start complaining about not having Sphinx's Revelation anymore.

Voice of Resurgence and Temple Garden are safe buys regardless of rotation. Trostani, Selesnya's Voice and Advent of the Wurm will lose almost all their value when rotation hits but they're also pretty cheap now.

Yeah Trostani is not used anywhere outside of edh even now I think. I personally like her, I set up an awesome combo with Trostani, Selesnya's Voice , Angelic Accord and Brindle Boar , Sac BB, get an Angel, then each turn I make a copy of said angel and off we go ;)

The problem with trying to build decks using only cards from the Theros block while Return to Ravnica block is still relevant is you run the risk of using cards from Theros that are inferior to cards in Return to Ravnica. Whereas your deck may be good, a mirror deck of yours may be better because they're not restricting themselves to only the Theros block. I say go ahead and buy cards you need, but don't go overboard, unless you are planning to play Modern as well. You have a good 3 months to play with the cards that will rotate out.

I recommend going WW using Fiendslayer Paladin , Precinct Captain , Boros Elite , Frontline Medic , Brimaz, King of Oreskos , Banishing Light , that sort of thing. I realize most of those cards are rotating out, but they are cheap enough so that you won't be out a fortune when it rotates.

tarkir announcement

September 26th is the release date of tarkir. On this day, m14, rtr, gtc and dgm will rotate out, as stated above. The point is to reinforce those who have mentioned the correct date of the release.

Rotation happens when the first set of the next block is released.

When determining whether to invest in the money cards in RTR block and M14, take a look at how they fit into other formats. For example, Shock lands, Deathrite Shaman , Voice of Resurgence , and Abrupt Decay are likely to hold their value well after rotation, whereas most Planeswalkers and cards like Kalonian Hydra will probably drop significantly.
