What are your hopes / expectations for Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty?

Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

Rumor has it, it'll be more of a dystopian cyberpunk setting. They likely will not feature firearms, per WOTC norm, but I could see them implementing other forms of "blasters" as we have seen depicted in the artwork for Innistrad and Ravnica, and to some extent Kaladesh.

This is going to sound really strange, but I think of all the sets, Neon Dynasty would be the perfect set to either continue or finish the Swords cycle, and give them some neon-plasma alternate artwork.

We currently have:

This leaves Gruul and Dimir. Now hear me out. If we have a dystopian future where some great power is seeking total domination, and an uprising to shatter the status quo and restore the natural order back to the Kami, I could definitely see Dimir and Gruul being a part of that. Or, at least one of them.

I’m super glad that people who liked the first kamigawa get to go back, but I’m sitting that one out. That set is pretty much in the middle of when I left magic. It bothers me, because there are a lot of cool cards and interesting characters (I’m assuming) but that era isn’t really my thing. I think it comes down to my getting into magic when most of the game was just a bunch of weird, seemingly unrelated things that you (a planeswalker) discovered on your journeys (like Pentagram of the Ages, Goblins of the Flarg, Castle) and had to sort of cobble together on your own. When weatherlight came around I had the (probably unreasonable) feeling that I was being railroaded into playing magic in accordance to a movie I hadn’t seen... which left a pretty bad taste in my mouth. In a weak defense of myself, this was before everything about all the characters and plots and whatnot were posted on an internet, and unless you were really interested in seeking that stuff out, it literally did not exist. All you had was the flavor text on the cards as hints about things that happened (could be recently, could be LONG ago like the Brothers War). It still makes me sad, because there’s a lot of good stuff there... it just isn’t for me. To reiterate: I dislike it when folks bad mouth things that they don’t like in a way that infers that the thing is genuinely bad or wrong. I don’t want this post to come across that way. What I do want is to share my experience so that I don’t seem unreasonable, and also to help figure out why on earth there are magic cards that I somehow don’t like. It’s very strange.

  • My gameplay hopes for the set are to have impactful support for Samurai, Ninja, Moonfolk, Rat and kami/spirit.

  • My Lore hopes are just to have more Tamiyo adventures!

However;

Because of the rumored "dystopian cyberpunk setting" I am not certain how i'd feel about seeing those tribes reimagined in that style.... I'm gonna go into this set open minded!

I'm interested/concerned about how the kami will be treated. The general rumor mill seems to be that there's a big, rural, traditional area outside of the futuristic cities, which is a pretty good match for real-world Japan. I expect the kami will represent that area more, but I'm sure there's going to be at least a few urbanized spirits.

More nezumi will be nice. They're probably going to be highly urbanized, which is okay for me.

I want to know how they approach the street-level aesthetic. Will the samurai armor be streamlined and shiny with glowing bits, or will it be basically modern armor, like a riot police look? What are the orochi and moonfolk doing? For that matter, what are the akki doing?

I hope we get a 5c Kami who cares about Shrines.

Shrine Tribal would be janky and so much fun!

  • Sidebar: Thanks everyone for the upvotes on my Swords ideas. Sword of Myth and Lore is something I would absolutely pay $35 for, if it was foil-alt art. That's exactly my play style. Wincons via unassuming beatings.

Honestly I kind of wish they would make a new plane to fit their new vision of Kamigawa rather than reimagine it all together. I think there’s much more of an appetite for traditional Japanese aesthetic than there was when Kamigawa first came out and that they could have found an easier way of capturing the player’s attention rather than giving the whole plane a facelift. Sets based on other world cultures such as Theros, Kaladesh, Amonkhet and Kaldheim have sold really well. Kamigawa was their first plane based on a preexisting culture so I figure the lack of interest was due to a lack of creative experience rather than the initial concept itself. I really disliked it when they changed the entire design of a plane like they did in Tarkir, so I have some pretty low expectations.

I thought perhaps they would be harnessing the Kami as a power source, though I am rusty on how the Kamigawa storyline ended, so I'm not sure if that makes sense with the resolution.

I honestly love the aesthetic, but I am also aware that messing this up looks just as bad as the worst possible Universes Beyond offering (imo).

I fully expect that there shall be a conflict between tradition and innovation in this set, since that is currently a major issue in Japan, after which Kamiagwa is modeled.

I do also hope to see descendants of both Toshiro and Michiko in this set, since they were two of the main characters of the story of the original block.

If there hypothetically were leaked cards from Neon Dynasty on a website where they regularly show official spoilers that's rhyming with pagicbroiler.lom, alongside pictures of packaging showing a nezumi on a motorcycle, would I get in trouble here for posting a link?

I definitely wouldn't post it then.

Occasionally, Mythic Spoiler will have unique icons to show specific groupings of cards typically not found within other sets. For example, Dragons of Tarkir have icons for the Dragon hoards, and Khans of Tarkir have them for the Khans. Another example is the Guilds for Return to Ravnica.

Now, some players may recall that Kamigawa had a lot of Legendary permanents in it; In fact, the most of any set. Champions of Kamagawi has 85, Betrayers has 43 and Saviors has 39, for a staggering total of 167 Legendary cards in the who set. So, it shouldn't surprise any of you that Mythic Spoiler as a new icon specifically for Legendary cards.

The first spoilers are up, btw. There's a new Hidetsugu, the PW card for Kaito and a new red dragon spirit. Looking great so far.

seshiro_of_the_orochi, you see the showcase artwork for the Demon? I wonder why they did it in five different colors when he's Rakdos? I personally think the black / purple looks the best.

I am debating slotting the red Dragon in some of my decks. At 4mv, it's hard to argue against it. The trample throws me off though - that's not normally seen on mono-red, especially when already having flying? I'd have preferred to see haste. Oh well.

THOSE BASICS HHNNNNG.

I haven't bought sealed product since Zendikar Rising. I will be buying some of this set for the Ukiyo-e lands. It doesn't matter what else is in the set (though I am pleased with the spoilers so far).
