Hi everyone!

We've been chatting about Ixalan here for a while, but on 21 Aug Wizards got into the act with four promo cards (and some upcoming tokens):

And then on 28 Aug they posted a BUNCH more:

So let's talk Ixalan!

If you counter a 3 mana spell you only get 3 back instead of 5. Meanwhile if you counter a 8 mana spell you just earned 3 extra mana

Trove of temptation could be fun in a (casual) Zedruu the Greathearted deck.

September 12, 2017 10:15 a.m.

dbpunk says... #5

The Trove is honestly... really good in Zedruu, especially if your running Zed as a super political deck.

Someone pisses you off on a game with several more aggressive decks? Attach that to them.

Someone needs mana badly and you need help surviving?Attach that to them.

Redace878 says... #6

The only problem is that it provides a good thing and a bad thing, so in a lot of situations you don't want to use it.

It does work well in fling style decks though

September 12, 2017 11:23 a.m.

snotice says... #12

Yep, steal the other crews' crew member, then when you got what info want out of them, fling them back at the opposing ship in the form of cannon fire.

September 12, 2017 11:38 a.m.

RazortoothMtg says... #13

I lik the idea of sacrificing treasure tokens to Makeshift Munitions, simply so I can imagine pirates shooting gold out of their cannons at eachother.

dbpunk says... #14

So they finally released a better pic of Dire Fleet Ravager, and it's completely tech for Inalla, Archmage Ritualist. Like I definitely would say that all the decks from C17 got some tech in Ixalan other than the dragon deck.

September 12, 2017 12:53 p.m.

Ya, Dire Fleet Ravager looks really painful.

September 12, 2017 4:09 p.m.

And he looks happy. Of course, cause "orcs of the Dire Fleet are downright jovial." If you got the pun, you get a metaphysical cookie.

TezzeretofCarmot21,
Wizards normally posts new Magic Stories on Wednesdays at 8:00am Pacific time.

I recommend keeping an eye on the Lore forum ... AgentGreen almost always starts a thread there whenever a new one pops up.

September 13, 2017 8:12 a.m. Edited.

AgentGreen says... #26

Hey clayperce. I got back into magic because of the lore; and the fact that sets like this makes me smile.

Usually WoTC brings their story up around 11 Eastern, so check there or check here when I will post the link (I will eventually get that URL tag to work on external sites)

Field of Ruin

Land

: Add to your mana pool.

, , sacrifice Field of Ruin: Destroy target nonbasic land your opponent controls, each player may search his or her library for a basic land card, put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle his or her library.

September 13, 2017 10:56 a.m.

Qolorful says... #29

That's a weird ghost quarter.. like.. it isn't necessarily a bad card, but it's weird

September 13, 2017 10:58 a.m.

Wow, Field of Ruin is a fantastic EDH political card. Not only does it Ghost Quarter an oppressive land, but it provides a bonus for everyone else, making them more likely to help you in the future. Plus you don't short yourself on mana like you do with Ghost Quarter, Strip Mine, etc.

Also...the land enters the battlefield UNTAPPED, which is big IMO. You could even use it to ramp another player who is 1 mana short of playing a response (i.e. removal spell) to a board-wide threat. I am a big fan of this card.

The traditional land destruction lands are still better, but this is an interesting alternative.

September 13, 2017 11:19 a.m.

dbpunk says... #31

It'll work well in hug decks probably, or maybe as a piece in Gitrog decks.

September 13, 2017 11:21 a.m.

More Dino-ramp:

Going by the flavor text, does this mean we get a green one as well (maybe at rare)? We already have Otepec Huntmaster in red at uncommon. I think it is pretty great that they are spreading out the dino-cost reduction over multiple creatures so each dino-archetype gets supported.

I feel the flavor on this one is wrong. "will do anything to get one," except attack lol. Should have been mercenaries that get paid to attack.

windlnk says... #36

Welp looks like we will be getting a Minotaur planeswalker after all.

September 13, 2017 12:55 p.m.

The art from the story leads me to believe we may see a non-planeswalker version of Angrath in this set. Horizontal as it is.

Then maybe the walker version in the follow up?

September 13, 2017 1:05 p.m.

AgentGreen says... #38

windlnk Will it be in this set or the next

Also, calling the colors as

September 13, 2017 1:05 p.m.

AgentGreen says... #39

LittleBlueHero I think he will be a straight up walker, he hinted that he is already a planeswalker, just stuck on the plane. His spark is still active, he just can't leave

September 13, 2017 1:07 p.m.

Ryjo says... #40

I think Mark Rosewater said there were only 3 planeswalkers in the Ixalan set. It's getting pretty close to the full spoiler, so if we don't Angrath spoiled today or tomorrow, it would be really unlikely that we get him in the set. If the Altazan packaging is reflective of Rivals of Ixalan, I think Angrath will show up in Rivals of Ixalan as a planeswalker, with Ajani coming in as . That would give the block an even distribution of colors among planeswalkers.

September 13, 2017 1:11 p.m.

Ryjo - He will likely show up in Rivals of Ixalan as we already have our 3 planeswalkers in Jace, Vraska, and Huatli.

However, today's magic story gives us an idea of what he looks like and he is indeed a Minotaur.

September 13, 2017 2:08 p.m.

This artwork leaves a lot to be desired.

Half of these cards look like Disney-Pixar Funko Pop! Figures.

September 13, 2017 3:21 p.m.

Qolorful says... #43

hmmm... looks like the city she saw in the story had some sort of kaladesh influence... not sure if that was intentional or if the artists are running out of ideas for designs. I hope it's on purpose

September 13, 2017 3:27 p.m.

AgentGreen says... #44

Qolorful It was on purpose....because if you read there's a line that suggested that something "sparked" inside her. The rule is when a Walker spark ignites; they planeswalk. She happened to appear in Kaladesh as her first planeswalk, much like Samaut ended up in Theros as her first planeswalk

September 13, 2017 6:59 p.m.

Qolorful says... #45

Alright just making sure that was the case, thanks for affirming that. I wasn't sure if it was kaladesh, or the golden city was based on kaladesh technology, or if they were just not doing a good job

September 13, 2017 7:03 p.m.

Well, we finally got the payoff:
