Is Cryptolith Rite really ALL that bad?

Modern forum

I could see it fitting into a Junk something or other, or a Westvale Abbey  Flip thing.

Imagine Lingering Souls + Cryptolith Rite into Westvale Abbey  Flip, Siege Rhino, you name it.

Eldrazi Scions make this thing stupidly overpowered in some ways. Tap for 1, sacrifice for 1, per each scion?

I'm not saying it's broken or anything, but I think it could have a place in modern (if not standard, mmm...mmmm... Secure the Wastes, Westvale Abbey  Flip, and Cryptolith Rite together).

Just my two cents, I think a lot of people may be undervaluing this card.

And then there's people way overvaluing it... Like this.

Unless that was an April fools joke... Which would make more sense.

Game-ruining? Really? If that's the case than Manaweft Sliver is game-ruining

That guy is an idiot. It's not going to break anything. It's good, yes, but there are so many answers to it. Tokens? Night of Souls' Betrayal Illness in the Ranks, etc. Golgari Charm hoses any deck that would play this. It's just not going to get there.

I posted a thread about the card back when it was spoiled. A lot of the regular Tappedout community came to a consensus that the card had a great potential to be broken in Modern.

And to be fair, this card has a bit over Manaweft Sliver.

  • Not a creature

  • Not subtype specific, which means you can manipulate creatures that are much easier to spam into play than Slivers and ramp your way into some kind of madness.

It also, in general, makes access to four and five color cards much more viable, like the Nephilim, or dumb cards like Door to Nothingness

It's not great. It seems fine in a dedicated build, but it doesn't fit into any existing shells. It also is a card that both doesn't do anything by itself and makes you play cards you don't want to play in a token shell if you don't have it.

I agree with a lot of the other sentiments. It's not that good in any existing shell but seems like it could be good in a dedicated deck. I like the card a lot but its not going to be broken without someone purposefully breaking it.

What kind of card would even break this card? Secure the wastes seems awesome, but I wouldn't call that broken, and noyhing existing or really any card I could honk up in my head would break this.

@Terrvex TBH I'm not convinced that guy has ever actually played Magic. His videos are bafflingly uninformed to say the least.

Murpy - It seems really, really strong with token producers and other things.

In casual mono green ramp it basically says have your 1/1 dorks, Those decks typically don't play any threats for a few turns, and this psudo engine has the same timer. Actually thinking about using this particular method in a Groundskeeper+The Gitrog Monster synergistic deck

ChiefBell I definitely agree that it makes a lot of mana, but then if you want to capitalize on that mana you need X spells (of which there are few) or big things, which are not what you want in your deck if you don't have cryptolith rite. Secure the wastes is awesome with this card and I might have to brew up a deck using that synergy, but you don't have much to use that mana on. Also, why not just attack with a ton of guys and win anyway?

Terrvex I saw that video lol, yes he is a bit wacko saying it's gonna break the game. He compared it to Affinity in standard, it's not going to do anything of the sort lol.
