What decks does infect struggle against?

Modern Deck Help forum

Im thinking of playing infect in modern and I want to know what its worst match ups are. If you're interested take a look at my infect deck on my profile I'm open to suggestions.

I like to think my infect matchup is pretty solid (B/W tokens). I have access to large amounts of 1 mana removal, plenty of chump blockers, and sideboard Chalice of the Void. I'm pretty sure these are all considered Infects general weaknesses and they are not limited to my deck.

The way I lose to infect is if they can actually protect their creatures before I remove them. I love watching my opponent tap out on turn 2 for their Blighted Agent because I won't be punished for using Dismember

Abzan company mainboards two copies of Melira, Sylvok Outcast, which just completely destroys infect altogether

main board melira if she drops before the kill is hard to deal with pre board. Lingering Souls is generally the big problem presented by token decks (Inkmoth Nexus almost reads unblockable in a format that seems to run so little flying creatures). The other massive pain is Thoughtseize. If you play conventional infect with 4 Glistener Elf and 4 Blighted Agent and 4 Noble Hierarch chances are you will only have one infect creature in your opening hand. Thoughtseize wrecks this and is very hard to come back from. I run an extra 3 Plague Stinger to combat removal and thoughtseize and it seems to work. And yes, Spellskite is the enemy, but it can also be very powerful for you too :-) Again, post board killing spellskite is a must. I play infect in modern and some in Tiny leaders although I am not a long time pro

1) cheap and efficient blockers. Notably tokens.

2) cheap and efficient control. Notably thoughtseize and path to exile.

3) Spellskite

4) Melira, Sylvok Outcast.

I would wait to see what happens with the bannings and the meta after it to be honest as it will shift dramatically once the Eldrazi has been banhammered

I would agree with people saying Melira, Sylvok Outcast and Spellskite are bad for you. The former is most often found the company decks and it basically means you cannot win. Spellskite is probably easier to deal with post-boarding, but either way you just want to win before they lock you out (which is doable with nut draws)

If the meta reverts to pre-Oath modern, expect a lot of Affinity, Burn/Zoo/Goblins(might be best of these 3), and infect at the forefront. Then Abzan Company and U/W control players who have adjusted to the current meta speed will probably have fun if they regularly stabilise against the surrounding aggro

Burn or RDW.

burn is really hard, because they have that t1 bolt. midrange is just in general some shit to play against because of thoughtseize and inquisition. Tron should be fine unless they hit u with a pyroclasm when u are tapped out.

A lot of Infect decks nowadays run a copy of Twisted Image mainboard just for Spellskite, as well as another copy in the side. On the offchance that you play against someone who maindecks it, or something like Wall of Roots, it removes it efficiently and cantrips. If not, then it's mostly just a Reach Through Mists, which still isn't awful. But having it available is likely your best answer to Skite, as most decks that play it don't protect/buff it. Melira is a different story, that needs to be Pathed ASAP.

Another matchup I could expect to be unfavorable is Hatebears/Death and Taxes, specifically because of Thalia, Guardian of Thraben. Doubling the cost of most of your pump spells is a huge hindrance when you're trying to win by Turn 3, and both decks play efficient creatures that can chump for days.

Turbofog dominates infect 80% of the time, just saying.

As mentioned before, Chalice of the Void is highly effective against Infect. I run it in my Merfolk sideboard; you can definitely expect it in that matchup and it's particularly devastating when you're also trying to find off unblockable beaters and disruption.
