[Budget] Naya Zoo manabase help

Modern Deck Help forum

Looking to build a budget-as-possible modern Naya zoo deck using creatures like Wild Nacatl, Kird Ape and Loam Lion that doesn't really have to be competitive in any way but could still function and I would have something to play in modern if I ever need it, so couple of questions.

  1. What are the best replacements for Goblin Guide and Tarmogoyf to fill their role in a budget deck, do you need something specific, or can you just add 2 playsets of pretty much any small creatures that would fit in a Naya zoo deck, as far as I know there are many variations of creatures in different decks.

  2. Is it viable to run a Naya zoo deck using those specific creatures I mentioned at the start without shocks, fetches etc. or could you get by using lands like Evolving Wilds (which obviously isn't ideal for an aggro deck) and which lands would those be? I understand that the manabase is a big deal for zoo decks so I'm really looking help for this one.

Any help at all or examples for a budget manabase are greatly appreciated!

Zoo is one of those decks that don't work with a budget Mana base . Should probably move on to rg or monogreen stompy instead

I've built some budget zoo for a friend. The trick for zoo is that you don't need to play Loam Lion, Kird Ape, or Wild Nacatl to make it viable, which relieves a lot of stress off of your manabase.

Try playing something more akin to 8-whack, but still in Naya. Play Burning-Tree Emissary, Jund Hackblade, Dryad Militant, Rakdos Cackler, Flinthoof Boar, Reckless Bushwhacker, and Ghor-Clan Rampager as your base. There might be some creatures I'm forgetting, but those are very good options.

for creature replacements you can go with swiftspear if you dont already have it. theres also Vexing Devil. if you post your decklist there might be a few more specific suggestions.

For budget builds checklands should be great (Clifftop Retreat & Rootbound Crag for Naya). Add Evolving Wilds for an alternative to shocks and fetches. Keep the basic lands from 4-5 per color.

As for your creatures, ToolmasterOfBrainerd's suggestions are great. Mirri, Cat Warrior should be great for the deck too. :D

Good luck!

Thanks alot for the suggestions! Looks like Im going with different creature base than I planned but yeah the lands are too important. I was actually looking those creatures earlier and they seem like a fine budget replacement since you dont need to hit those specific land types. How about spells with these creatures, Lightning Bolt ofc but I was thinking Lightning Helix in the mainboard even tho its normally played in the side.
