Sorry, you don't get grandeur. You don't get aura swap. You don't even get delve, fateseal, OR frenzy.

Sure they sound Greek/Roman-esque, and they could definitely use a rehash, but no...

SCRY. Why scry? Three reasons:

  1. No one ever plays scry... ever. (Ever heard of Magma Jet , Crystal Ball , Condescend , or Preordain ? No, no one uses those cards.)
  2. Even the rares with scry aren't ever played (hint: there aren't any rare cards with scry).
  3. Scry comes from Greek culture. (BZZZT! Scrying comes from Persian culture, Mesoamerican culture, and the Latter Day Saint movement. Not Greek or Roman.)

Good job WotC. This is sooo awesome. -_-

Hey, don't diss scry! It's not that terrible. Yeah, compared to some abilities it's bad, but not the worst ability ever. My friend runs a few scrying cards in one of his decks, including Preordain , and it's helped him draw everything he needs on a regular basis. I can't count the amount of tomes he's scried into a counterspell, Roil Elemental , or something similar.

Uh, Delver of Secrets  Flip used Preordain A LOT along with Ponder to set itself up. Where were YOU during SOM and INN block?

Scry's not terrible! Preordain is run in pretty much every legacy deck that uses blue and likes to dig for things. But the new mechanic Devotion, which seems like the keyword they fixed from Chroma, seems really cool. They could do a lot of things with that.

I'm glad they re-published scry AFTER the miracles all rotated in standard :)

guys have you wonder why Preordain cost over 1$ and it common rarity? its because scry is a great card advantage that will help you improve your next draw

im not a blue player at all but i do recognize this is a really good card it even cos few cents less than Lightning Bolt

IMO

Magma Jet , Condescend , and Preordain are played and pretty well known cards in modern and legacy.

Scry is actually amazing. Serum Visions is played in Modern for being a great way to cantrip and set up combos.

Preordain is banned in modern for making combo too good.

Magma Jet is playing in RDW because as well as being a burn spell, it also sets up your next 2 top decks so you ain't drawing land as likely.

Crystal Ball is an EDH all star for setting up top decks.

Condescend is played in U/X Tron for setting up top decks and being a hard counter.

Guess what? At least half of the people on this site better have heard of Preordain ! Not only was it a 4 of in all Cawblade and U/B Control lists two years ago, it's banned in Modern because it made combo decks to consistent. It is used in Legacy, Pauper, Vintage, and Classic competitive decklists. There were 32 copies of Preordain in the top 8 of a tournament during Zendikar - Scars Standard. The card changes games by giving decks a good way to dig toward a specific card, be it an answer, a threat, or a counterspell, all while drawing a card to replace itself. In the Pauper format, Preordain , along with Delver of Secrets  Flip , is an axis of the format. Like, kind of the equivalent of Sphinx's Revelation in Standard. So, the whole "no one plays scry" argument is kinda silly. The only one that I have not personally seen competitively is Crystal Ball .

Condescend is played as a 3-of in Mono Blue Tron in Modern since they can make a lot of mana. It also is a 1- or 2-of in Blue White Tron in the same format.

Magma Jet is valuable to burn decks as a shock with a built in way to get rid of excess lands and dig towards key cards like Fireblast , Flame Rift , and friends.

So, do your research next time before complaining that nobody uses the scry ability.

The card that they printed scry on is actually PERFECT in control, at least as I see it.

Thassa, God of the Sea
2U
Legendary Enchantment Creature - God Mythic Rare
Indestructible
As long as your devotion to blue is less than five, Thassa isnt a creature. (Each U in the mana costs of permanents you control adds to your devotion to blue.)
At the beginning of your upkeep, scry 1.
1U: Target creature you control can't be blocked this turn.

I'm sorry but a 5/5 finisher that can make himself unblockable that, oh wait, is INDESTRUCTIBLE who also sets up your topdeck before even drawing? But wait there's more! You can control when he activates! Combine that with the new Bident? I'm sorry you were complaining why? He even protects himself until you are ready to protect him.

Also, I agree with DNSolver here, you should check your facts before spouting off claims like "no one uses Scry".

Preordain is banned in modern it's THAT good. TBH I can kind of smell Serum Visions in the danger zone for a ban too for the same reasons. (It's ALMOST as good.)

Magma Jet is insane for RDW as others have said.

Condescend is an ALLSTAR in tron decks and in Quest for Ula's Temple decks.

Crystal Ball is, indeed, pretty good in EDH where every draw being different screws with consistency. The ball gives an EDH player stability. It's a budget replacement for Sensei's Divining Top , next thing we know you're going to claim THAT'S bad...

Tempest if they do i think they should think of print it as uncommon IMO

uhhh Preordain was banned because you got to scry 2 before drawing....that was the big card draw spell during it's standard and after it rotated out...until it got banned of course

August 27, 2013 10:07 a.m.

Ohthenoises says... #17

HarbingerJK I know why one is better than the other however it seems to be wizards' unofficial mission statement to get cards like that out of modern. Serum Visions still provides a ton of stability that can be abused.

Wow. You guys need to get a lesson in SARCASM 101. mstancea was obviously being sarcastic when he said that nobody uses scry... What he WAS complaining about was the fact that scry as a mechanic already gets tons of love and works perfectly, yet Wizards chose to bring it back instead of one of the other older abilities that could do with a rehash.

August 27, 2013 11:37 a.m.

Someone's got their panties in a wad. That said, Devotion looks awesome, and I'm ok with scry. Grandeur is useless in commander. Aura swap is difficult to balance. Frenzy is useless in blue. Fateseal might've been good (i'd like it) but because of wizard's interest in the singleton format, they are steering away from it. Delve isn't really a good mechanic. It has its place, sure, but I don't think we need it with ravnica's grisly salvage and whatnot. So aside from flying, scry seems to be the only real perfect fit. I mean, morph could make a comeback...but do we really want to see that again?

MagicalHacker says... #22

Firstly, I love scry, and when I said that it was terrible, I was being sarcastic... I am in fact extremely surprised that everyone did not get it... That's also why I gave the most famous scry cards which are AMAZING. My point was that scry didn't need a rehash, it's seen tons of play, unlike the other keywords I mentioned...

So everyone, you are preaching to the choir.

Except RussischerZar and Goody. Thank you guys.
