Different Dual Land Types

Hello there wonderful people:

So when I first started playing Magic, there was one type of dual land cycle - they came into play untapped and gave you your choice of one of two colours. I think they're called Legacy Duals now?

Since I started playing again (after a long, long absence) the cycles of dual lands has exploded! And they all seem to have common names. The only problem is, I don't know what all of them are.

Some are easy - shocks cost two life if you want them untapped at the start. Scrys scry 1 when they come into play. Fetch lands get sacced to search for other land (aside: do things like terramorphic expanse count as fetch lands, even though they're not as good? Or do they have another name?)

Others, like Pain lands, Buddy Lands, Check lands, etc... are tougher to figure out. Some I think I know (check lands are the ones that 'come into play untapped if you control X or Y', yes?

But if somebody could reply with an in-one-place explanation (with examples, for us easily confused folk) that would be absolutely amazing.

Thanks!

pain lands= Caves of Koilos esque lands
buddy lands= Sulfur Falls esque lands
check lands= Seachrome Coast esque lands
filter lands= Wooded Bastion /Mossfire Valley esque lands

those are the main lands that you will run into. there are also the karoo lands (Boros Garrison ) and Volcanic Island duals are commonly referred to as abur duals. (alpha, beta, unlimeted, revised)

This page has a table on it which contains all the different kinds of lands.

As for the original dual-lands, I've heard them referred to as "ABUR Lands", "Legacy Duals", and simply "Dual Lands".

miracleHat, I also see Buddy Lands referred to as Check Lands, and Seachrome Coast -and-friends referred to as Fast Lands.

I hear "check lands" too, since they "check" for a specific board-state when they enter.

Personally, I've always seen the "Karoo" lands referred to as "bounce lands" seeing as they force you to "bounce" a land back into your hand..

Check lands are the cycle that check to see whether you have x or y types of lands in play as they enter, fast lands come in untapped depending on the number of lands.

aren't the buddy lands, the ones like tainted lands, which tap for colourless unless you control a swamp?

That's what I thought. They need a "buddy" (a friend to one of their colors) before working.

I thought that the buddy lands were the innistrad. They needed a buddy to be untapped (normally, their buddy was a shockland back in standard).

@TitansFTW, don't forget about the not so good odessy lands like Mossfire Valley ! Does anybody know the real name for the tribal duals (Auntie's Hovel ) and storage lands (Molten Slagheap )?

I'm pretty sure "tribal duals" and "storage lands" are the names for those already. Though there are other cycles of monocolor storage lands (Icatian Store etc. and Fountain of Cho etc.), hardly anyone uses them so I doubt there's room for much confusion. Similarly with the Skycloud Expanse cycle in Odyssey, those were the original "filter lands" but they're only played extremely rarely.

Ice Age had the Land Cap depletion lands (not to be confused with the Remote Farm depletion lands), Tempest block and Kamigawa block had something similar for friendly colors (Thalakos Lowlands etc. and Cloudcrest Lake etc.), and Tempest block also had the Salt Flats slow pain lands for enemy colors. Invasion block introduced the Coastal Tower slow duals for friendly colors, Coldsnap had the Boreal Shelf snow duals for friendly colors, Zendikar had the Sejiri Refuge refuges for friendly colors, and Worldwake had the Celestial Colonnade manlands for friendly colors.

So yeah, there are a lot out there.
