Primal Sovereign

Custom Cards forum

Both Defense of the Heart and Tooth and Nail are extremely powerful cards, but, given that green has the greatest emphasis on creature out of all the colors, I feel that it would only be appropriate to have the effect of those cards on a creature, so here is what I have created:

Primal Sovereign Show

For this card, please note that it has two separate triggered abilities, which can be used in any order; typically, a player will immediately put the creature that they find onto the battlefield, but they are not required to do so. The other two cards that inspired this one each search for two creatures, but, since this card is already a creature, itself, it searches for only one creature.

What does everyone else think about this card? Does it need to have protection? I gave it that ability because this card essentially epitomizes green's philosophy and strategy, so I wished for it to have protection from that color's enemies. I eagerly await your feedback.

It makes sense. Unless we returned to Zendikar or Dominaria (with kicker) though, the kicker seems out of place. Maybe keep the cost, lower the P/T and make both triggers on etb, rather than one on kicker. Seems like a pretty good card though.

Drakon562, I feel that it would be too powerful if both abilities triggered without additional effort by the player, because tooth and nail has entwine, which is very similar to kicker.

Having said that, kicker is such a versatile and easy-to-use mechanic that it is not limited to any particular plane in the multiverse and I personally am disappointed that WotC does not use it more often (although doing so might cause it to become less special).

DemonDragonJ, I agree with you wholeheartedly on this, and love this card.

This might be wandering away from your idea too much, but could you reduce the cost and p/t, and limit what it can search for? Maybe search for a red or white creature, or search for a creature with the same p/t to get Wild Pair in there, too? I see this card being used pretty much exclusively to tutor up a finisher or enabler, something like Craterhoof Behemoth or Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite.

I've noticed recently that WotC has been shying away from tutors and has almost replaced them entirely with Elvish Rejuvenator effects, especially on creature ETBs.

To address some of the previous comments as well, what about this?

Primal Sovereign

Casting Cost: 5GG

Creature - elemental avatar

Power/Toughness: 6/6

Trample

When primal sovereign enters the battlefield, reveal the top seven cards of your library, put up to one creature card from among them or from your hand onto the battlefield, then put the rest of the revealed cards onto the bottom of your library in a random order.

Funkydiscogod, MagicalHacker, the fact that WotC is using certain mechanics less frequenter does not mean that players who make their own custom cards need to do so, as well, and I dislike effects such Elvish Rejuvenator because they are too unreliable; what if there is no card that meets the criteria in the cards that are revealed?

legendofa, Flooremoji Defense of the Heart and Tooth and Nail have no restrictions on what they can find, so why should this card?

DemonDragonJ, I was joking lol. Just saying ETB Trigger is funny. Unfortunately almost exclusively Eldrazi Titans Have WYC triggers. I think the card is pretty good, and a great idea.

DemonDragonJ There's really no reason to restrict it, other than to make it a little different. Just floating an idea out.

What sort of decks are you envisioning this going in? As it stands, I'm mostly seeing it as a finisher tutor, probably in EDH. That's not a bad thing, in itself.

Flooremoji, what if the card could search for creatures with a converted mana cost no higher than that of the sovereign itself?

I think that would probably make it the new Protean Hulk. I guess not necessarily a bad thing.

legendofa, yes, that is how I envisioned using this card; by the time that a player can spend 10 mana (which should not be especially difficult to do in green), they should be able to have a major impact upon the game, which this card definitely does.
