Should I Keep Fungal Shambler and Kheru Lich Lord in My Mimeopalsm Deck?

Commander Deck Help forum

I have an EDH deck with The Mimeoplasm as its general, and I have both Fungal Shambler and Kheru Lich Lord in that deck, but I am not certain if I should keep those cards in that deck, since I am not certain how well they work with the theme of the deck, so I certainly would appreciate any feedback that anyone here can offer any feedback, on this matter.

I am contemplating those creatures with creatures such as Indulgent Tormentor, Demon of Loathing, or Sheoldred, Whispering One, but I certainly would be interested to hear any other suggestions that other users of this forum may have to offer.

What does everyone else say about this? Should I keep Kheru Lich Lord and Fungal Shambler in my The Mimeoplasm EDH deck, or replace them with creatures that better fit the theme of the deck?

As a 4/4 for 6 mana across three colors, Kheru Lich Lord needs a strong ability to justify its cost, and I don't believe it has one. It costs three additional mana to have any more utility than a vanilla creature, and the randomness and lack of repeatability make it very unreliable. It also directly competes with The Mineoplasm. Fungal Shambler is better, and probably close to on par with Indulgent Tormentor and Demon of Loathing. Sheoldred, Whispering One is by far the best option of what's listed. There's some tension with the commander, but it's mild and temporary, and I think the battlefield control more than makes up for it.

I always love Indulgent Tormentor, and jump at any opportunity to use it!

legendofa, FormOverFunction, I am very glad that you both are fond of some of the creatures that I am contemplating, but I certainly would be interested in hearing other suggestions, as well; what are some other creatures that would would fit this deck's theme (i.e., getting as many cards as possible into my opponents' graveyards, so that I can steal creatures from them with The Mimeoplasm)?

I was thinking about Gyre Sage, in an attempt to leverage the counters that get put on mimeo. I don’t know if that’s worth it, but I’m going to think more about those counters, because there might be something weird in black or whatever that benefits from getting counters. The other thing I was thinking about was Phenax, God of Deception, which could change the operation/play of the deck pretty significantly. You have a lot of pips in your creatures, so you’d probably have him active reliably. Phenax made me think about Undead Alchemist, which makes more mill, but that guy exiles which is the exact opposite of what you’re looking for... I’ll let you know what I think of regarding how to benefit from the +1/+1 counters (other than the normal crashing around).

FormOverFunction, this deck does not have a great emphasis on +1/+1 counters, so Gyre Sage would not be a good match for it, and, even if that were the case, I believe that Kami of Whispered Hopes is superior to Gyre Sage in the majority of situations. Similarly, this deck does not have many, if any, zombies, so Undead Alchemist is also not a good match, for this deck.

As for Phenax, God of Deception, he is a great recommendation, so I think that I would like to wait to receive several more responses, before I make a decision, on this matter.

I guess what I was getting at is everyone gets excited about the copy aspect of mimeo, which is understandable, but not the +1/+1 counter half of the ability. I was hoping to find something that got better with the counters a-la gyre sage. Sadly, I’ve come up dry so far. Good luck with Phenax though!!

Is Szadek, Lord of Secrets too expensive for this deck, as well? His ability definitely works with the strategy of this deck, but he costs seven mana to cast, so I worry that I may not be able to summon him sufficiently quickly for him to actually make an impact upon the game.

But do you need to cast him? All you need is to get him into a graveyard... I like the idea of using that “counters = mill” ability! That’s the sort of thing I was talking about. Good find!

FormOverFunction, that is true, so I suppose that I could experiment.

Also, I have both Baleful Strix and Gretchen Titchwillow in this deck, mainly because they are generically good creatures with low casting costs, but I imagine that there must be creatures who better suit the theme of this deck; what do you think about that?

Those are definitely good additions. For commander-specific, how about something like Elusive Krasis? Evasion like that would be pretty sweet if you’re looking for evasion/commander kills. There’s some pretty wild stuff specifically from the Simic guild that would be nice to build mimeo into a weirder beast lol. Even Experiment Kraj could be a trip. Use it to put counters on other creatures and your mimeo would get those too, because of the counters.

Zameck Guildmage could be nice for card draw, too.

FormOverFunction, those are both excellent creatures, and Shapers of Nature also are very nice, but this deck has only a minimal focus on +1/+1 counters, so I am not certain how well they would work, in this deck.

Does anyone else here have any suggestions on this subject?
