Selesnya - Which Commander?

Commander Deck Help forum

Posted on May 31, 2016, 2 p.m. by JohnnyBaggins

Hey y'all,

I decided to add a sixth commander deck to my stash. I've also already decided that it's going to be in Selesnya colours - but here is where I'm stuck.
I'm considering:
- Sigarda, Host of Herons - I think she's amazingly strong as Enchantress Voltron. But I'm not 100% convinced she's fun in the long run. How does she play out? Are there paths or, if you build her, your victory looks almost idential each time?

- Rhys the Redeemed // Trostani, Selesnya's Voice Is a token strategy viable in EDH? I've honestly not ever seen anyone play either of those, but the idea sounds fun. Somewhat prone to lose to board sweepers, but extremely explosive. Are these competitive enough for someone who considers winning a relevant part of having fun in Magic?

- Is there a bollocks GW legend I'm overlooking?

Thanks for the input!

In Sigarda, Host of Herons, I find myself winning by commander damage every time.

Rhys the Redeemed is definitely a thing in edh. Tokens can lose to board sweepers, unless you have Akroma's Memorial, Eldrazi Monument, etc.

Trostani is particularly fun with Phyrexian Processor.

Captain Sisay is pretty consistant since she just searches for your answers.

Are we thinking 2-player edh, French ban list, or multiplayer?

Sisay is strong. Saffi Eriksdotter enables several recursion combos if you like that sort of thing.

I second Captain Sisay, that my favorite GW deck. I also have a Sigarda, Host of Herons enchantress deck that can win, but it is generally the same formula: get her out and pump her with various goodies. Swing in face. Captain Sisay allows you to win in many different and play what you have in your deck (tutor queen!). I also have Trostani, Selesnya's Voice. Its fun because there are multiple ways to win. Token overrun them, gain life like crazy, and have fun.

Gaddock Teeg!

I have a Rhys the Redeemed and a Captain Sisay in my group, both of them can hit hard if properly supported.

TheHelvault - As such, very linear, right? The decision trees seem very limited in these kind of decks.
Well, losing to Sweepers as the Tokens deck is not surprising. Any deck will most likely lose to the most efficient answer against that deck. If you're trying to win with a massive boardstate, cards that trade One-for-10 with you will put you in trouble.
Burgdawg - Classic multiplayer EDH.
brokendwarf//Omeros: I already have a reanimator-themed deck, so I'm not super interested in Saffi. I also don't really like the appeal Sisay brings and I really don't like a commander that dies to virtually anything, in particular not if it dies to Elesh Norn. But thank you very much for the input!

Remaining question: Rhys vs. Trostani - who wins?

Discounting Gaddock Teeg? I'd go Rhys the Redeemed elves.

Rhys doesnt even need elf tribal to win. He is just so strong.

Burgdawg - I already run a deck that would be similar to Gaddock in Grand Arbiter Augustin IV and while I'd love to play Gaddock - flavour-wise - he just doesn't bring enough to the table for me to be really interesting.

You don't want a commander that dies to Elesh Norn but you're seriously considering Rhys the Redeemed?

There's a considerable difference when your commander costs as opposed to in terms of how problematic Elesh Norn can be.

It's just that Rhys tends to encourage an elfball strategy that collapses hard to an Elesh Norn if you don't get your anthem effects in play first.

Karametra, God of Harvests, Krond the Dawn-Clad, and Selvala, Explorer Returned are all decent options, too. Selvala can be a lot of fun and lends herself to more of a group-hug/elfball approach, whereas Krond and Karametra reward you for going big.

All in all I feel that either Sissay or Sigarda are the best options for Selesnya however, Tolsimir Wolfblood can be pretty fun. He's a lord for green and white and makes a token for just in case moments...or to abuse any etb engine you want to run (Aura Shards I'm looking at you). His mana cost is a bit high given his power/toughness though.
