263rd at GP Minneapolis —May 23, 2014
Went 6-2 at GP Minne and then lost the win-and-in for day 2. i had some luck as well as not many people being prepared for the deck. i also ran some sub-optimal cards due to availability, and i found some things i'd like to change. i made a couple play errors, but i never felt dead against any of the matchups, which was nice.
Rd 1 - 0-2 against affinity. kept 2 clunky draws and never found more than 2 mana before turn 5 in both games. also got stuck with either Creeping Corrosion or Fracturing Gust in hand after boarding. makes me want a faster hate card for affinity.
Rd 2 - 2-1 against MGD. LD'd him out of game one early with a Leonin Arbiter and 2 Ghost Quarters. game 2 he got his engine going fast and i hadn't really sideboarded because i didn't see any cards game 1. game 3 i was able to keep him off balance like game 1 and close it out. he never had the mana for his big spells and my Loxodon Smiters were too much for his mana dorks.
Rd 3 - 2-1 against UR storm. he was able to combo off through a Thalia, Guardian of Thraben in game 1. i drew my 1-of sideboarded Rest in Peace in games 2 and 3 and it was enough to keep his Pyromancer Ascension offline long enough to attack him to death. this match makes me want another gy hate card in the board.
Rd 4 - 2-0 against kiki pod. it was hard to tell he was a pod deck because he never drew pod. i killed 2 kiki's game 1 that he was just using to make dudes to chump block. game 2 he mulled to 5 and scooped to an early arbiter/ghost quarter.
Rd 5 - 2-1 against affinity. he had a weak hand game 1 that was still enough to beat me. he had unlucky hands games 2 and 3 and i was able to land an early kataki in both to crush the little board he had.
Rd 6 - 1-2 against melira pod. game 1 my head wasn't on and i made my bonehead play of the tourney. he had naturally assembled finks, redcap and Viscera Seer with no pod. his eot i flashed in an Aven Mindcensor, to which he responded with a chord for 2. i let it resolve while looking at my Path to Exile in hand and one open mana. i should have path'd the seer in response to avoid the infi combo, but the chord took me by surprise and i just punted. no guarantee i would have won either way, but it was bad. we split close games 2 and 3, with him just getting enough dudes out in g3 to attack me to death.
Rd 7 - 2-0 against burn. not sure if he kept bad hands or what happened, but this was the easiest 4-2 rd 7 matchup i think i'll ever play. he never put any pressure on, and my game 2 Aether Vial, 2 2-drops, and Sword of Light and Shadow loop was enough to beat down, stay alive, and have a constant stream of creatures.
Rd 8 - 2-1 against tarmo twin. played against a pretty competitive dude (this is my first tourney bigger than an fnm) and he made the game a little less fun. he also made me think hard about every decision so hopefully i got better out of the experience as well. i don't remember much about the games, he called the judge on me for putting a die on his side of the table to track the power of his Tarmogoyf. i called the judge on him when he tried to cast Threads of Disloyalty on my Loxodon Smiter when the only other legal target was his own Scavenging Ooze. i figured it was worth a shot to see if the threads would have to target ooze since it was the only legal target, but the judge ruled that it went back to his hand and he got a game warning. i won a close one in game 3.
Rd 9 - 0-2 against naya zoo. my luck finally turned and i had some mulligans while my opponent came out crushing. i also had my first deck check before the match which was exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time. i also sat next to conley woods this round and watched his eggs deck pull out a turn 2 win against an affinity opponent who thoughseized on his t2 and was poised to deal lethal damage t3. it was nuts and i was thankful for the deck check to be able to watch that.
overall a good tourney. some things to think about are another gy hate card, faster affinity hate, maybe some more pro red/lifegain to combat naya and burn decks. also thinking swapping to a d&t build to run splicers, flickerwisps, mangaras might give me more interaction rather than hoping i have the right bear in hand for the matchup.
