Major update: Prophet of Kruphix —Feb. 12, 2015

MAJOR update today. On my way to Chipotle I had a bit of a revelation. It came from thinking about my deck and other decks and the modern meta for the past few days, but I'll cover my reasoning first followed by my solution.

This deck has potential, the multiple threats along with the inherent unpredictableness means I usually take game 1 in every set. However, after side-boarding, I tend to lose the next two. Thanks to Harabaz Druid, I can pretty consistently get 5 mana on turn 3. I've been looking for a way to utilize this power spike to get a significant advantage by turn 3/4, preferably enough to win the game. I HAVE to have this because all other modern decks can (though won't always) win by turn 4 or earlier. Because my deck doesn't have much in ways of disruption, I need a potential win condition by turn 4. Rite of Replication did it for awhile, but it was too inconsistent. Sun Titan and Deadeye Navigator were good additions, but they didn't have the immediate impact I was looking for.

With the addition of Tracker's Instincts, I can look through my deck even faster than before for the creatures I need. So on the way to Chipotle, I had the revelation.

Prophet of Kruphix

The prophet is perfect in this deck (so far). I can play her as early as turn 3, meaning she won't be under threat from my opponent most times until their turn. So say they respond like most modern decks would and cast a Path to Exile or something similar. With a Deadeye Navigator i'd be dead since I don't have mana. With Prophet of Kruphix, I can cast all the remaining creatures in my hand, and have the mana to do it since she untaps Harabaz Druid and all my lands.

Furthermore, this means I can cast Lead the Stampede and Tracker's Instincts on my turn much more safely, because I'll have the mana to cast any creatures I fetch on my opponent's turn.

OTHER CHANGES

The reason this is a big update is because Prophet of Kruphix changes a lot about the deck. I've replaced Sun Titan with the Prophet, and Deadeye Navigator with Soul of the Harvest for even more card advantage. I've replaced Kazandu Blademaster with Hada Freeblade so that I have more 1-drop allies to make Harabaz Druid produce more mana. I've replaced Aether Vial with Birds of Paradise to add more creature triggers for Soul of the Harvest, more mana for Prophet of Kruphix, and just being a creature in general helps with Lead the Stampede and Tracker's Instincts.

I'm going to be doing extensive testing over the next few days, so let me know what you think about the changes.

I have some serious doubts about the claims made in the description, lol. I highly doubt that you regularly gain 70 life off the cleric.

As a side note I would consider Ancient Ziggurat for color smoothing.

Doubling Chant ... Doubling Chant!

I love Doubling Chant in my simic combo mill build. For allies, it presents insane conditions.

RoarMaster Obviously it depends on the matchup. There's no way I get that much in a game against infect or burn (unless I can get a Deadeye Navigator out early with Harabaz Druid. However, my meta has a lot of midrange control decks. Against those I do normally gain 70 life or more. I've tried Ancient Ziggurat, but in this deck its just a bad Cavern of Souls. I would draw it too many times when I'm trying to get mana to cast a Lead the Stampede. That being said, it wouldn't be unreasonable to run one or two.

Femme_Fatale, I haven't experimented with Doubling chant yet, that would definitely be something to try. I do worry that it's only useful with good board position, and it's not a creature so it won't be fetched with Lead the Stampede, but I will try it out as soon as I can.

That is a problem, which is why my simic mill combo doesn't even become T3. It's just something to test, I found that it requires a much more controlly position.
