Can't decide how to get into Modern

Modern forum

I've been wanting to get into Modern for a long time now, but I haven't been able to decide what kind of deck I want to build. I want to build something viably competitive, but I want to it be something personal for me -- something that really tells people, "This is how I like to play Magic."

I love both graveyard shenanigans and control, and I want to make the deck to be fairly budget (my goal is under $200 excluding lands). The primary ideas I have right now are Grixis Control, Dredge, Living End, and Glittering Wish Control. I was also a little interested in building a Grixis deck around Living Lore like what Travis Woo recently did for Channel Fireball.

I am incredibly indecisive about this, and I would like opinions and possibly any more ideas. Thank you!

Building a control deck will give you a lot of leeway to expand your collection and slowly build up new cards. You might start out without thoughtseize, but acquire them over time. Its the easiest to deck to upgrade, it's probably the most 'solid' deck on your list, and it's actually varied to play.

My friend has built living end, and loves it. The deck can post good results in metas that arent ready, but can fold easily if people have graveyard hate in their sideboard.

I built mono blue tron and i like it. Its in your 200 dollar budget and its a viable control deck. PLus you can then go from mono blue to any other tron variant after that if you want to.

Actually it's fairly resistant to almost all graveyard hate except Rest in Peace which not many people run. It doesn't care about Scavenging Ooze and Grafdigger's Cage doesn't hit it. A decent Living End player is only really scared of RiP.

That doesn't diminish the fact that the deck is super linear. It does literally the same thing every. single. game. It might mix up the order it cycles, but that's about it. I dislike decks that present limited growth over time through poor options.

Living end is probably one of the best super budget decks available in modern, however, as ChiefBell said, its very linear and plays out the same every time, so it gets rather boring rather fast imho. Outside of lands and fulminators, the deck costs all of $15 to make.

Fish are also fairly cheap to build, aside from the aether vials, but vials are a great investment and can be used in a plethora of decks.

That is true about the graveyard hate. I forget that not all graveyard decks fold to all graveyard hate. It is also true that what you would buy for living end would only be usable in living end.

I've played against it a fair number of times now that my friend has it, and it is a little more interactive than I thought it would be. The main plan is to cycle creatures and then living end, of course, but still their are some places where deck interacts with the opponent, and they come up fairly often.

Grixis control would give you some base cards to expand off of though. A Grixis delve list has been gaining some popularity lately, but it is very expensive way over your budget right now, and you would be losing some key pieces to the deck if you cut them out.

i agree that grixis control would be the most interesting option for repeated playability. card selection spells and Snapcaster Mage even let you try out some interesting 1-ofs that would let you make your mark and personalize your list.

dredge and living end as others have said seem to play out the same way in most games, and it seems there aren't many spots in the list to really change things and personalize (though LSV recently showed off an interesting living end/twin blend so i guess there is still room to innovate). i'd agree that Rest in Peace really hurts these decks, but Scavenging Ooze and Relic of Progenitus can also make things petty tricky even if they're not as effective as RIP. living end also dies to counterspells pretty badly.

Glittering Wish control could also be fun and interesting to play, though may not be as competitive. i don't have experience playing the deck, but at a modern event this weekend i saw what i consider a strong player not even sign up for the event because he saw too many other decks that he didn't think his 5c wish deck could even compete with. i'm not sure what specific decks he was referring to, but the pool of decks seemed pretty diverse as far as i could tell.

You could try something like Merfolk, as kintighd. Check out my build:

So, now I'm torn between Mono-U Tron, Grixis Control, and 4c Glittering Wish.

I have been mostly considering 4c Glittering Wish because I have really been interested in 4c Gifts, but I think it is waaaaay out of my budget because of Snapcasters and Lilis. Is Wish the way to go, or should I just stick with Grixis or Tron?

Grixis is better than U Tron, imo. It's more proactive and flexible, and looks fun.

If you're interested in blue tron i have a fully assembled blue tron deck list on my profile which I am thinking about selling. If you make me an offer I will consider selling/trading it off to you. It's a very good deck, honestly though It doesn't fit my playstyle too much so I'm moving on I think. So lemme know if you're interested.

Jund loam pox can be a blast too, plenty of control, plenty of graveyard shenanigans and while admittedly T2, it's pretty budget and uses a few pieces that are useful to other decks: Abrupt Decay Thoughtseize or Inquisition of Kozilek

Give this a few play test. Graveyard shenanigans, controllish aggro, effective & very versatile.
