How Popular is Tariel?

Commander (EDH) forum

I have not seen very many black/white/red EDH decks with Tariel, Reckoner of Souls as the general; Kaalia of the Vast is by far the most popular general of that color combination, with Zurgo Helmsmasher and Alesha, Who Smiles at Death being nearly as popular.

I myself have a deck with Tariel as the general, since angels are my favorite creatures in this game, so I wish to ask: how popular is Tariel as an EDH general? Why have there not been a great number of decks that feature her?

Not popular at all I've never seen anyone playing it yet.

it ain't a popular commander. I've never seen one played, and I own a copy. Just doesn't seem interesting enough for me to WANT to build a deck around it I guess.

Not dinging you on your own reasons ofc, it's just a matter of taste in commanders, playstyles in general.

I like Tariel, too, but my first build was pretty mediocre and I haven't tried to revamp it yet. She's got some legit strikes against her--cmc, tap ability is random, and limited printing--so she has to really appeal to make her worth the effort, I think. I'm thinking maybe a WB Death and Taxes (heavy on the extort) with some R for a little unpredictability. Or artifact ramp and Ghostly Prison/Sphere of Safety effects into Avacyn, Angel of Hope and Avatar of Slaughter. Good luck with your build!

High cmc.

The ability is prohibitive. You have to have an opponent without hexproof with creatures in the graveyard.

Don't get to pick the creature.

I'm building a deck with her as the commander (very early stages).

I wanted to make a mardu deck where the primary spells focus on Boros while splashing black. There will be a mini-theme of warrior creatures as warriors just seem to have a high population under this colour combination. Rather than the 99 aiding her, her ability will aid the 99. Plus her ability will be like milling, where there is fun (or disappointment) in the random outcome of her ability.

She is horribly expensive, her ability isn't very good, all in all there isn't much reason to run her over other Commanders.

I will be as bold as to say, she is so bad, it is hard to even justify a spot for her in the 99. Even in a deck like Kaalia of the Vast who can bring Tariel, Reckoner of Souls out for free, it isn't worth running.

Of course you could make a deck around any Legendary Creature, so do what you like. I simply gave you reasons why it isn't a popular Commander.

Yes, according to Edhrec.com, she only takes up roughly 7% of Mardu commanders.

That said, her page on that website has some interesting inclusions...

You could always build around killing and reanimating certain creatures with her, exiling the stuff you don't want with guys like Withered Wretch and Cemetery Reaper. But yes, she's definitely limited in scope and expensive.

I think she is good at the very most basic aspect of magic giving you three things as a CMDR she can swing in the air dealing damage, shr can then block with 7 toughness she can block a lot, the before your turn you can tap her and get value.
