DGM Updates —May 7, 2013

I removed:

3x Boros Elite
2x Blind Obedience
1x Cavern of Souls

and added:

1x Searing Spear
1x Lightning Mauler
2x Tajic, Blade of the Legion
2x Mountain

The result is a slower than usual aggro deck that maintains its strength through the mid-game. Tajic, Blade of the Legion in particular makes the deck quite resilient and plays very well with Ajani, Caller of the Pride. I may consider adding a second Ajani after more testing. I would still like to try Legion's Initiative in the deck at some point if I can get at least three to try in place of a few non-creature spells. There are so many theoretical advantages and hindrances it presents that I think I can only find out its level of effectiveness by trying it out.

Feel free to discuss my changes and make suggestions in the comments!

Hello,

+1, you did a good job and this deck is very fun to play. Can you just explain me in which case or how do you use Assemble the Legion please?

Assemble the Legion comes in against the slow control decks, like Esper or Bant, as well as UWR Flash. All these archetypes load up on creature removal after game one, so they're soft to enchantments that win the game on their own.

Every game I have cast Assemble the Legion , it has won because my opponents have worn out all their removal at that point. The key is to apply continuous pressure so you can sneak it through opposing countermagic.

I disagree. Too slow. Assemble can win on its own anyway, it doesn't need an additional trick that just speeds it up slightly.

wait a second!! do i smell an interesting combo!! lol but really say you have cast a Aurelia, the Warleader and you attack blah blah blah so then could you during your next turn your attack and before you enter your additional combat phase, thanks to Aurelia, the Warleader , use Legion's Initiative to say exile all your creatures, so Aurelia, the Warleader would technically be a "new" creature, and then , depending on your mana, essentially have 5 or more combat phases??

also can you do this and still get damage through or would you just be exiling your cards before damage??

If you can find enough cards to bounce Aurelia that many times, sure. This has been an already known truth. But one Legion's Initiative will only bounce your creatures one time.

My other deck, The Nayan Apocalypse, uses this interaction.

Im just going to make a crazy suggestion why not try an Odric and see if you can get him swinging either with frontline or charmed and make em all block reckoner.

RTFC man read the card.

ahh yeah that happens.. get a lil too excited and read what i wanted to read lol xD and yes i already knew you can bounce Aurelia, the Warleader a prime example would be Cloudshift i just didnt notice that legion initiative was exiled permanently. Btw what would you say is your worst match up??

My most recent worst matchup is RUG Flash. That deck is packed to the brim with counterspells and removal, so I can never get any pressure going. I have a record of 1-4 in games and 0-2 in matches against it. The more conventional deck that I tend to have trouble with is Jund Midrange, but even there the matchup is maybe 60-40 at worst.

So how come you removed Legion's Initiative from your possible additions?

My two-drop slot is crowded as hell, and Legion's Initiative really hampers my early game where I'd rather play a dude instead of a noncreature spell. It was basically a choice between Searing Spear , Boros Charm , and Legion's Initiative , and I really prefer the removal and trickery that instant-speed spells provide.

Also, less than half the deck would receive a power boost from the buff on the red half of things, which really hurts in theory because I want to deal more damage more quickly rather than make my guys a little tougher and slow the game down.
