Budget Changes —Nov. 6, 2015

Removed the Tectonic Edges and swapped the Sideboard into the Maybe section to better deal with the budget nature of the deck.

I might try and find budget alternatives to the sideboard cards over the next few days.

Nice deck! I would recommend putting in Honor of the Pure to anthem up your creatures, especially your tokens.

Spirit Mantle and Hyena Umbra are both pretty decent.

Spirit Link can be used for your own lifegain, or thrown onto a troublesome creature to negate its damage.

Mark of Asylum could be decent for the sideboard.

The problem with Honor of the Pure is that when we only expect to have 1-3 creatures out, the net effect isn't really worth it. If one of them is Myth Realized and another is Favored Hoplite, it does less than a single Defiant Strike does.

It would work well with the token backup plan, but when we go wide, the power of the creatures isn't as useful as the number of them, so I'd much rather just be able to trigger Heroic on the token generator more often. As such, if we're looking at (hypothetically) cutting Defiant Strike for it, I feel that Defiant Strike does more for our game-plan in more situations. If decks were to be 80 cards and not 60, it would likely find its way in sometime after Phalanx Leader, which I feel sits better with our game-plan currently.

Spirit Mantle and Hyena Umbra are both fantastic cards, and I spent a long time considering them. The reason they didn't make the cut is because they don't cycle, and there are only so many non-cyclers the deck can afford to include. If you give it a quick playtest, the cycling cards are the real meat of the deck. The only non-cycler is the protection spell, which is better than Hyena Umbra because it's an instant, and so can save either creature if you have two out, and also doubles as pseudo-Spirit Mantle by making you unblockable for a single turn. As such, I went with the slightly weaker Angelic Gift to keep the cards coming in.

Spirit Link suffers from the same problem, but would be a decent sideboard card against burn. However, I think the better sideboard card against burn would be Ordeal of Heliod - as we can likely trigger it the turn we play it for +10 life. As such, it didn't feel like it really had a place in the main or the side, but it's a card I've used before to great effect.

Mark of Asylum is interesting, and could be good against burn, but we already run 6 main deck protection/indestructible spells, and one of our creatures gets that ability whenever we need him to for just one mana and any one of over a dozen other cards. This deck is already good at protecting itself from burn, and so I felt that using the sideboard cards differently would be a better use of them - in particular, shoring up the Affinity, Bogles, Living End and Twin match-ups.

The downside to the deck is that we fall into hitting a lot of the Bogles hate. As such, I included two Aegis of the Gods in the side to prevent players forcing us to sacrifice creatures. He can swap in for Seeker of the Way, and keep our creature count fairly consistent while also benefiting from the varied protection suite that we run.

Thank you very much for your input though. I appreciate the suggestions, but I don't think that they fit into the deck as well as the existing cards. After I purchase them (probably a month or so down the line), I'll revisit that thought and see bout trying some of the options you've given out.
