New Commander —Sept. 9, 2017

Updated with Ramos, Dragon Engine as my commander. Also threw in a few other cards along the way as you can see in the description and deck list.

I came across this deck because I've been itching to build something similar.

What I love about it: It uses all five Gods and, while slow, synergizes well late game and is just lots of fun to play in a really casual environment/playgroup.

Problematics: As you pointed out, it is slow. It's way overpriced for what it does and for a casual group. If I'm going to spend this kind of money, I'm building an amazing deck (in the sense of speed and effectiveness.

Overall: This deck is fantastic for a fun environment. The price is terrible for a casual deck.

700 for dedicated EDH isn't bad at all. also maybe it's a meta where there's lots of slow decks and that's the norm.

I've seen my share of $500 decks kill $3000 decks by a landslide (I have a few $400-$700 decks that are meant to win and show that one can win without paying 2 months worth of rent or mortgage to do so)

I love this deck, don't get me wrong! I love decks with theme and flavor and creativity thought put behind them. This one fits all those descriptions.

ASDmtgplayer Sadly there's no way to really make this deck cheap. Even when I first threw it together a couple of years ago it was over $500, and it was much less focused back then. I have certainly not spent the full price on this deck though. Most cards have either been lucky pulls, or fantastic ebay deals. Overall the deck may be slow, but it can be deceptively quick when piloted right. I've come out with turn 5 and 6 kills on multiple occasions.

All in all though, I will never knowingly pilot this deck in a heavy combo environment. This deck is at it's heart a flavor packed casual deck.

This is an awesome deck my only problem is that it is too slow, especially for 1v1. I just tested it against Mikaeus, extreme sub $20 budget and this deck lost. Overall though I think this deck is great and is probably better with more people.

Starfield of Nyx instead of Open the Vaults should help this deck a bit

slovespokemon Well this deck's main weakness is infinite combos seeing as it does not have any, and the $20 Mikaeus deck is built to combo out. But yes, I only every play this in multiplayer pods.

Vextierium I'm still super iffy on Starfield of Nyx since it causes a lot of rather complicated layers of interaction between devotion and Starfield's abilities. It's really a lot to keep track of when half of my creatures are gods with the devotion keyword. Things will be different depending on the order things entered the field and depending on the order each of their clauses for making them creatures was met.

I could go into a long detailed explanation on the interactions between the gods and starfield if you want it, but overall I will say offhand that it's really just too complicated to run in a deck with all of the gods. I'm the type of player who keeps notes in his head, but I would need to keep track of this on paper if I wanted to play it by the proper rules.

Starfield of Nyx overrides the gods devotion period, your gods will always be creatures with there power and toughness equal to there converted mana cost while they are active or not for as long as Starfield of Nyx is active and on the battlefield, that said that is a extremely small downside in consideration of Starfield of Nyx's abilities. If that is not your concern please inform me of exactly what you mean please.

Nice deck... we share the same passion on having the 15 Gods...

Some suggestion... you can try squeezing in "Mana Bloom" this has very good synergy as a color fixer and a card draw engine, feeds the sigil well also...

i like your concept on cheating creature to the game.. =) +1 to that...

we have different styles on the deck and same here am looking for techs to improve my deck...

Actually Vextierium, if their devotion is not satisfied when they enter the battlefield, you're right, Starfield of Nyx overrides the devotion and makes them a creature with power and toughness equal to converted mana cost. And even if their devotion is subsequently satisfied, they still keep that power and toughness. But if the devotion is satisfied as they enter, they enter as a creature, so Starfield doesn't apply, and they have their printed power and toughness. But if they then lose devotion, then they become a non-creature enchantment and Starfield applies. So you have to not only keep track of devotion, but also when that devotion happens.

Actually, I just had a look and it's even more complicated than that. As you can see here: http://boardgames.stackexchange.com/questions/24787/how-does-starfield-of-nyx-interact-with-the-theros-gods

lindleya1 Thank you, that is exactly what I was getting at. It would really make the deck overly complicated if I wanted to play by the rules, and I'm a bit of a stickler for the rules with this game.

DERPLINGSUPREME I refuse to run Humility and Godhead of Awe in this deck, I can't allow my gods to become humbled. :p

April 28, 2016 1:24 a.m.

but just imagine all of the games you can break!

like, actually break! it ends the game in the funniest way possible.

then again, I guess seeing my gods get humbled would really salt my apples.

Anyways I was thinking why not add Cryptolith Rite?

Every playtest I try of this deck, both in this and in Cockatrice, tries to leave me mana-dry on several attempted first hands. You may need to consider buffing the land count/ramping capability and finding some fat to trim elsewhere.

May 28, 2016 11:14 p.m.

A couple more lands and Cryptolith Rite is probably the right direct

Oh coarse how come Wrath of God is not in this that fits the theme and that's the kingpin list of removals.

May 30, 2016 9:59 a.m.

Oh and for and for a planeswalker

If your willing to go a little off budget

Or if eternal master reduces the price enough

I think Jace, the Mind Sculptor will work in this.

May 31, 2016 12:05 p.m.

oh actually (sorry triple post)

how about Burgeoning

Have you ever tried any of the bringer creatures? They're godlike based on the suns: "There were five Bringers, all concepted as manifestations of the energy of the five "suns" (moons) of Mirrodin. Each of these rare creatures has a mana cost of 7MM, but can be played for WUBRG instead of the mana cost. Each has trample and a powerful ability that may be played at the beginning of the owner's upkeep."-mtgsalvation

You are forgetting the best planeswalker out there. This would be Deathrite Shaman. Best utility CMC planewalker lol

This looks like a really fun deck. If I had the resources, it is definitely in the vein of what I'd assemble.

In the theme of godly cards I'm curious as to whether you've considered any of the myojin? They are, after all, gods. They provide good devotion, and all have very powerful abilities. Myojin of Cleansing Fire for example is a board wipe on legs, and the gods are indestructible; you keep creature advantage. Myojin of Life's Web is arguably the most effective way of cheating many things in at once. They're not the most competitive by any stretch, but they certainly are fun, and they're very good at what they do.

moysturizer says... #23

@Supplice, Myojin Shinto Gods sound great. I did miss those and will try to fit some in.

September 17, 2016 3:41 a.m.

The Myojins could work actually

What each one does if you remove the counter.

White = creature board sweep

Red = land board sweep

Green = cheat any number of creatures from you hand to the field

Black = force everyone to discard their hands

Blue = draw for each permanent you control.

ElendVenture says... #25

@Supplice If I were to add the Myojins, I'd have to take things out that in my opinion work better for the deck. Don't get me wrong, they were some of the first cards I considered outside of the Theros Pantheon. To show why I did not include them I will weigh them against the cards that knocked them out of the running, the Lorwyn demigods. Devotion was a major point you talked about, but the Demigods do it better in every way. Shinto Gods give 3 to one color, the Demigods give 5 to two colors. One Demigod on the field provides enough devotion for nearly half the pantheon to be creatures, where one of the Myojin don't even give enough for 1 to be a creature. Streamlining the devotion enablers is really key to this deck since half of my creature spells are only creatures when devotion is met. While the Demigods are not indestructible like the Myojin can be, they have a much more relevant creature type to the deck(I'm most likely going to call Avatar on my Cavern of Souls, not spirit) and come in greater numbers. Plus, when I use a mass recursion spell on them, they are still relevant to game play instead of being vanilla creatures.

It's a shame that they're not more playable, because I really wanted to add them when I made this deck.
