Sideboard Added —Feb. 9, 2015

I just modified the deck to add in a sideboard. Now we have some cards that can be edited without losing consistency. I went with a transformational sideboard, since siding out one combo for another seems like the way to go.

Also by popular demand, there are 4x Extirpate in the sideboard. Never have your Surgical Extraction countered by a Spell Pierce again!

Game 2: Pithing Needle, naming Shadowborn Apostel.

@Fadaram That wouldn't stop the deck, it isn't designed around the Shadowborn Apostle fetch ability. Pithing Needle would need to be on Shelldock Isle to shut down the deck. Also we can normally win game 1, so we just need to hope they don't draw their hate cards before we win game 2 or 3.

Have you considered Tolaria West to function as ways to tutor for Shelldock Isle?

@TheHorse The problem with Tolaria West is that it costs to activate. I would need to up the land count by a fair bit to make this work, and then we would likely have more than 20 cards in our deck when we do get Shelldock Isle out. It's a good idea, but just too slow.

It needs a sideboard, Pithing Needle on Shelldock Isle or a Blood Moon will literally keep this deck from winning. At all. Put at least 3 basic lands in the sideboard, and some removal. It desperately needs that.

@Kryzis What would you suggest to add into the sideboard?

Also I know that this deck is super fragile, it's a tier 3 deck that I'm trying to make work. The real issue is that sideboarding also weakens our combo, since we would need to remove Shadowborn Apostles to add in the sideboard cards. In order to activate Shelldock Isle, we need to have 20 or less cards in our library. That isn't likely to happen if we are boarding in 4-5 cards, and it will slow us down a couple turns to finally get the required amount of cards in deck.

Incredibly sick. Ordered.

@Wic_Uber Glad you like the idea. I'm not sure how viable it will actually be (since it dies to Pithing Needle, Blood Moon, Thoughtseize, Spell Pierce, etc). Still, it's a blast to play.

ChrisH says... #11

Yeah, but it should pull off game 1 every time. For example, my Tier 1 modern burn would have no way to deal with it... maybe its time to throw in some Molten Rain in the side.

Maybe add in Extirpate if you're having trouble finding the Surgical Extraction consistently. Deck looks hilariously awesome.

@Wic_Uber I highly doubt that you will need to sideboard for this deck, no way it's breaking the format or anything.

@Nigeltastic I originally had Extirpate in the deck, but I removed it since it slows down the combo by a full turn. I would probably leave them in the sideboard to side in against control or 8rack matchups, but for the main deck it's fine to just use Serum Powder to find the perfect hand.

Extirpate as a backup if you don't have Surgical Extraction ?

I playtested the deck, and now I think that you need 4 less Shadowborn Apostles, and add 4 copies of Dismal Backwater or the searchland for B/U instead, so you can hard cast emrakul. Also, maybe a Sol Ring or two would help. These are just suggestions, so feel free to ignore them.

@Yggdrasil60 I decided to cut the Surgical Extractions from the mainboard because they slow our combo down by a turn, and it means that we have to keep hands with a land. Once I get a full sideboard ready, I'll be adding in 4 copies there. It just seemed better for our game 1 to run 4x Serum Powder instead of the Extirpate

@buttergolem You should never hardcast Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. In Modern, decks have to be fast or else you lose. That is why we run the combo, since it is essential to win by turn 4-5.

Sol Ring is also banned in Modern. It would be way too otherwise.

February 8, 2015 12:04 p.m.

This is rather genius. Unfortunately as of right now I can't think of anything that might aid the combo. You've streamlined it fairly well. If I could provide you with extra +1's I would. But, I'll continue to think on it and provide any suggestions should I come up with them.

+1 and subscribed.

@CanadianShinobi Glad you like it, and thanks for the +1. Right now I'm mainly trying to figure out what could possibly go into the sideboard, and also if I should run Brilliant Ultimatum as a 1 of.
