Unable to read cards because of default artwork

I am hoping someone can suggest a way to adjust my settings to avoid unreadable cards. The default card art chosen by the site uses the most current card, which I would generally prefer because they tend to have the most updated text, however cards like Force of Negation are currently being shown in a foreign language, and I often run into Phyrexian or full art poster cards that are basically unreadable.

Is there a setting to never show alternate art?

Which one(s) is giving you issues?

There's a setting in your deck edit that lets you default to oldest printing on your decks. That should accomplish what you are looking for.

I do not have a complete list, and it changes as new sets are put out, but currently Force of Negation is by default displayed in Japanese, Glistener Elf is in Phyrexian eventhough Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite seems to be normal, Estrid, the Maskedfoil is in Poster foil, and a whole mess of cards Akroma's Will, Dovin's Veto, Mangara, the Diplomat are in the new FF full art which I feel is somehow harder to read than the Phyrexian. I am also not sure why the site chooses to randomly make some cards foil. I have never designated a card as foil but on many of my decks cards are randomly assigned as foil, however this is not consistent. Fabricatefoil is foil in some of my decks but not others, Passionate Archaeologistfoil, Prosper, Tome-Boundfoil etc seem to be foil in all new decks I make. (Unwanted foils not only throw off the general value of the cards/decks but they also ass foil to the end if copied from the main list, so It's necessary to either delete that from every randomly foiled card, or go into the editing screen before copying the list. Below is an example deck I have made. If while viewing the sample deck you are not seeing the same style as me, I can provide screen shots instead.

Is there an option to opt out of cards defaulting to alternate art or foil?

P.S. In previewing my post I can already see that most of the examples above are displaying differently in this post than they are in the decks I am making.

Thanks Femme_Fatale, Using that setting does work, however it also means that sometimes I need to look up oracle text for older cards that have since been reprinted, and I would also like to see cards coming out in new sets with their new art. I just find the alternate art to be inconsistent, and frustrating.

I understand I am just being picky! and what you suggest does solve my problem :)

I guess I would just like to request that someday there be an option to opt out of alternate art.

Yeah it's been on the to do list for a while but there's a lot on that list and everyone's really busy.

Interestingly you shouldn't be able to see the FCA stuff as that set is marked as skip as latest. Perhaps that is bugged? Are the other stuff you are seeing (exception for the FIN Force of Negation) all secret lair stuff? There may be a bug there.

The foiling of stuff is frequently commander products as they frequently have foil only cards, or the lowest card number non-m15border frame type only has foil treatment. We don't show what doesn't exist, so if you can find commander product face legendary cards that have non-foil treatments we'll mark them but until then foil is the only thing available.

Specifically for your P.S. message, check to make sure your deck's default is the "----" dotted lines. That is the newest set but ignoring sets marked as skip as latest (this is standard procedure that is used in comments and forums). Your decks may be defaulting to "newest printing" which ignores this. This lets me know that I need to figure out a better name for that preset and to make sure it's the default.

Thank you so much Femme_Fatale! The "---" looks like it's exactly what I need!

I am still seeing the foreign Force of Negation so if you are too it may just be missing the 'skip as latest' label in the database.

What you said about the foils also makes perfect sense with cards that only have a foil printings, but I was still noticing some cards that were being incorrectly marked as foil so I poked around for a bit.

I found that on "---" Fabricatefoil is Planechase foil, which I don't think exists, but I do know a non-foil version exist and so does a printing in a newer set (Foundations) that should be shown for both "---" and "Newest".

I also noticed that, when set to "Newest" all of the shocklands correctly show the new Clue foil cards, however when switched to "---" they revert back to their previous printings in Guilds of Ravnica and Ravnica Allegiance, but they are still marked as foil. The source of that might be a bit harder to dig out because it works properly again when set to "Lowest Price" even when showing the same printings for both "---" and "Lowest" (ex. Godless Shrinefoil). This is also true with Titania, Protector of Argothfoil so it's most likely that the logic that checks if it should be marked as foil, is not properly checking the 'skip as latest' flag.

I don't know if you all actually have a todo list but if you do, maybe you can throws this in as a note next to foil tags so that whoever gets stuck working on that someday has a little head start! :P

Thanks for all of your help!

Looks like it is indeed a bug with skipping latest on a set but not skipping the listed treatments for printings within that set only if that set has partial reprints (like 40k warhammer or mystery booster 2 specifically for Fabricate and Titania.)

Also turns out I had this bug logged but without knowing why it was happening so this was fruitful.
