First Post! The pros and cons of High Tide in Legacy

First! Wait this isn't youtube, nevermind. I have playtested the High tide made by Colin Chilbert: http://magic.tcgplayer.com/db/article.asp?ID=10871 , not only is it very fast, it has counters to negate any threats to the combo, I have yet to lose with this deck, and I have won by turns 4-6.

High Tide = <3. Oddly enough, I share my first name with hime, and I am also a huge fan of the deck. It is very potent, and my little budget version can consistently win on turns 4-6, too. His version is obviously much better than mine, but the archetype is extremely rewarding to anyone who can pilot it competently.

In addition to these new forums, an edit button would be nice.

I own and play this version of High Tide: deck:high-tide-revisited

I went 3-3 at SCG Baltimore. My rounds were as follows:

2-1 vs Zombardment

0-2 vs BUG Control

2-0 vs Maverick

0-2 vs Esper Faeries

2-1 vs Dragon Stompy

0-2 vs Goblins

Unfortunately, discard is one of the big enemies of High Tide, and there was a lot in the room. I still felt very good and very comfortable with the deck, and I'll be playing it more at local Legacy events (which there are a lot of in the Baltimore area).

Pros: Its a blue deck..nuff said there. Lots of FoW fodder. Less reliant on dual lands in many builds. Less vulnerable to wasteland and the like than other combo.

Cons: Candelabra of Tawnos is extremely pricey and only sees play in Twelvepost besides High Tide. That's the major reason we don't see more of the deck I think.

The usual combo hate see's a lot of play: Discard I.E Duress , Chalice of the Void @ 1, ETC

No long game. The combo motto is go off or go home, but hey at least the games will be quick. : )

I don't think the cost of Candelabra of Tawnos has anything to do with it considering the rest of the deck is inexpensive and isn't running Polluted Delta , Jace, the Mind Sculptor , and Underground Sea . It probably has more to do with how much sideboard hate there is for combo.

I'd say that the deck's main weakness might be Pox and Goblins, just because of Land Destruction and Cavern of Souls .

Or a sideboard featuring Leyline of Sanctity

@sylvannos, still, most people aren't going to invest $1k for a set of candelabra's over buying the aforementioned duals, fetchs, and jace, which are used in far more decks. But to each his own i suppose.

Oh, also, Pithing Needle and Phyrexian Revoker see a fair bit of play as well, add those to the hate list that you'll expect to run into post board.

magic99 How does Pithing Needle hurt High Tide? I mean Candelabra of Tawnos sure, but my friend has been playing a budget high tide for a little while now, I have the deck on my page, it doesn't have too much interaction ( like Force of Will ), but the deck usually goes off around turn 4 pretty easily, I don't think Pithing Needle could effect much... Could it? (In a non-Candelabra Deck)

Main targets for Pithing Needle against high tide would be Candelabra of Tawnos and Thawing Glaciers , your two main ramp engines. But if you're not playing Candelabra you may not be playing Glaciers either, in fact probably not.

After that, no I suppose not, fetchlands if you play them for deck thinners and brainstorm shuffles (as some players do) would be the only other target, thus not worth it.

Against typical High Tide it's worth boarding in for sure. Against budget almost definitely not. But that's some of the charm of budget too, catches people out sometimes.

The exception to that is some High Tide Decks are now running 6-8 fetch lands and like 9-12 islands, in which case I would board in for just those.
