What Cards Should I Absolutely Have In An Atraxa Deck?

Deck Help forum

I recently constructed an Atraxa, Praetors' Voice deck abusing +1/+1 counters and a saproling swarm to protect my planeswalkers. But I'm still not 100% sold on the deck because I want it to be as competitive as possible. I like to spend a couple weeks theory crafting before I buy, that way I feel confident in my decks performance. So what cards should be in every Atraxa deck? And if you're willing to help my current Atraxa deck, what cards would you swap out and why? I do not have a budget btw.

Atraxa, The Explosive Swarm

Pick a focus and stick to it. Right now you're spread between like 3 archetypes and that'll effect consistency.

If you go superfriends w/ tokens stick with Atraxa.

If you go +1+1 counters I'd suggest Reyhan, Last of the Abzan and Ishai, Ojutai Dragonspeaker with Atraxa in the 99.

I get what you mean by I'm split across 3 archetypes but it's kinda how the decks supposed to function. Produce tokens, cast planeswalkers, put counters on all of them and proliferate. Tokens act as a barrier for the planeswalkers and an absurd army once they get going.

Anyway, I'll definitely be adding Reyhan, Last of the Abzan into the 99. I've been meaning to add him but keep forgetting. He'll probably just replace one of my creatures as I feel Atraxa is a necessary commander for what I'm going for.

Thanks for the feedback!

Incubation Druid has definitely been on my mind. I'm thinking of replacing Crystalline Crawler for something like Incubation Druid or Viridian Joiner Any thoughts on that?

Spreading across archetypes means that some games you'll see your creature support with only planeswalkers or vise versa. The more focused your deck is, it's more likely everything will click consistently.

You need to focus your build if you hope to see consistency.

Last_Laugh is 100% correct. For +1/+1 counters use Reyhan, Last of the Abzan . For more the more difficult counters use Atraxa, Praetors' Voice .

I imagine your deck right now plays with frustration as you find yourself trying to fight the currents to get your deck to do what you want it to do rather then reaching that point where it just flows smoothly.

Additional tutors could help offset some of the consistency issues, though they can only go so far. You already have Demonic, Vampiric, and Diabolic, but I might suggest Enlightened Tutor and/or Worldly Tutor as well, as you have a good handful of key enchantments and creature you'll be wanting to grab as consistently as possible (such as Doubling Season).

Sun's Champion seems like a reasonable fit. Makes tokens, buffs creatures, is a planeswalker.

Last_Laugh and KibaAlpha. I just removed a lot of what I'd call unnecessary planeswalkers from the deck and replaced with with either Hydras, a mana producer or some sort of removal. How do you think it looks now?
