Card creation challenge

Custom Cards forum

Posted on Aug. 28, 2015, 4:15 p.m. by TheNextRedDude

Ok, heres how this works. You create a card to the specifications of the person above you, then list your own card idea for the next person. I'll start.

Variety XX

Sorcery

If X is 2 or lower, draw X cards. If X is 3, put X +1/+1 counters on X target creatures. If X is 4, return X target creatures from your graveyard to the battlefield. If X is 5 or more, Variety deals x damage to target creature or player. If X is 10 or more, you win the game.

Create a life gaining multicolored Turtle with power twice it's toughness or vice versa.

Shadow Agent

Creature - Cat Ranger

Spells with a supertype your opponents cast cost more to cast.

Revenge

3/1

Iceberg Leviathan

Creature - Leviathan

Iceberg Leviathan's power is equal to the number of snow permanents you control and its toughness is equal to the number of snow cards in your graveyard +1.

n/n+1

Magmatic Fallout

Sorcery

Magmatic Fallout deals damage to target creature or planeswalker equal to the number of permanents with a supertype their owner controls.

If you control a snow permanent, it also deals 1 damage to each creature without flying your opponents control.

Do we have enough stuff for the leviathan faction? In my mind, that deck/faction can both synergize with AND hose snow. Let's see more of that

Had a lot of ideas, so I decided to throw down some support. With the variety of ways we've been avoiding the traditional for this set in terms of color identity and creature types, I decided to introduce Eelfolk as a slight twist to merfolk as the oceangoing species alongside the leviathans.

The challenge is to keep this plane going, so lets see some enchantments for any of the factions.

legendofa says... #8

How many original cards are you looking for? Five hundred original cards will take up ten full pages, not including other commentary. Not necessarily a bad thing by itself, but it would make it harder for people who aren't regulars to join in.

Unlife I like the Eelfolk idea, but are they mechanically different from Merfolk?

Guided by Light

Enchantment

Whenever a creature you control attacks, it deals 1 damage to target creature. If that creature was snow, it can't block or activate abilities until end of combat.

The brilliant light of the sun on a clear day lets a griffin see for miles. The only thing sharper than their eyes are their talons.

Trapped by Light

Enchantment

Prevent all damage that would be dealt to you by creatures with flying.

Whenever a creature with flying blocks, tap it and put a stun counter on it.

The searing shine of sun on fresh snow can blind a griffin. Their sharp eyes are no match for the sharp glare.

March 13, 2024 5:27 p.m.

TypicalTimmy says... #10

Something we should all take a moment to discuss are set abilities. We need to reign in central themes for each clan so build around.

Snow is really more of a global principal, but I believe the Yeti should benefit the most from it. The inclusion of using Ice and Shield counters makes sense to me as it showcases their ice based magic and unbelievable stature and durability. Counters also work wonders in the Bant colors, too.

The Rangers, I opted to try out Mark, which should have plenty of room to expand upon. Marking feels like a very Ranger thing to do, and I feel it works great in Golgari because green could be seen as ties to nature and hunting while black has ties to stalking and killing.

I think another wonderful idea for Rangers could be the reintroduction of Trap cards.

Thoughts? What else could we look toward?

March 13, 2024 6:05 p.m. Edited.

legendofa says... #11

The first couple Ranger cards had the survival ability word, which wanted you to have four or more nontoken creatures (my creation), and Revenge (When this creature dies while it's blocking, create a 1/1 colorless Spirit creature token with flying that can't block) (sergiodelrio's creation), so I'm going to push for a little more of that. As the originator of the Rangers, my initial mechanical concept was for building up their resource flow and cutting off the opponents' resource flow.

Marking is good. Traps fit thematically, but how many should there be?

sergiodelrio says... #12

Do the and go in one deck so we get 4 precons, or do they go in 2 decks and we get 5?

March 13, 2024 7:57 p.m.

Unlife says... #13

I'm not sure about any specific keyword abilities for the leviathans, but I think leaning towards damage and destruction would be the way to go. I'd had one of them leaving behind Ash tokens after card types are destroyed, as well as turning lands into wastes/destroying them depending on their type. Leaning into that with a variety of keywords that fit both leviathans in general as well as seems like a good direction.

legendofa A lot of the decisions for eelfolk was based on falvor. Merfolk usually fall into bant, which is currently occupied, though I know we could have had monoblue. I was actually considering an ocean naga race akin to sea snakes, but eel felt more at home in the depths. With most of the other tribes fighting for control of the leviathans, having a race that is more symbiotic in their relationship, and trying to prevent the control felt like a good addition. Mechanically, I thought brining in an ocean based tribe with some more aggressive abilities, such as first strike, double strike, menace, etc, would help support the low end of the tribe as levaithans tend to be large.

March 13, 2024 8:15 p.m.

legendofa says... #14

Unlife That's really good reasoning for the mechanics and flavor. I was more wondering if it could add to the Merfolk type. Have them be flavored as as eel people, give them eel bodies, but the typeline says Merfolk to give them some utility outside of this set.

Basically, why make a new creature type? No wrong answers, just my own curiosity. If you just want them to be mechanically distinct from Merfolk, I'm all good with that.

Current challenge: Create a mono-green ramp card for Matzoth.

Still need to figure out if we merge or split and ... I vote merge actually. We can have more tribes than factions and more factions than decks. It's ok if they cooperate in one deck. We have to go Partner Commander anyway imho, since my OG Bridgette design was supposed to be a commander originally. I officially give her errata to partners with ???

Next challenge: Make a partner for Bridgette! Consider the color identity and mechanical themes. Should probably be a Yeti, maybe their queen or sth.

mudkipdude says... #20

So, about traps. I actually made a cycle in my free time, for each colour, that were traps but also kinda like Force of Will in their casting, but hopefully more fair. I like the trap ideas for the rangers tho. I’ll post them later, probably. I like the idea of marking for rangers, but I’ve seen kind of a pattern in some of the leviathan cards, which is “whenever you deal 5 or more damage”. Did we get to a decision on hideout tokens for the rogues? On merging the rogues and rangers, we’d have to choose maybe two or three mechanics out of: marking, hideouts, recursion, survival, artifacts and traps. Given that snow and most of the things we are talking about are mainly new mechanics (with the exception of artifacts, recursion and big creatures) so maybe more like 30 new cards for each deck would be more likely. As some of you may have noticed, I’ve been more invested in matzoth than I have in this forum for the past year or so, so I’d really Like to see it prosper and maybe print the decks. I vote for merging the rogues and rangers, personally, and the mechanics being artifacts (hideouts as kinda part of that), marking and traps. I’ll post a couple cards later. The challenge is still to create a 30 foot eel leviathan.

Vent Lurker

Creature - Eel Leviathan 20/20

Sense It Coming: As an additional cost to cast this spell, you may return any numbers of creatures you control to their owners hand. This spells cost less for each creature returned this way.

Whenever this creature attacks, you may put a shatter counter on up to 3 lands. They become wastes and lose all other land types. If they are snow lands, destroy them instead.

If a creature is dealt 5 or more damage greater then its toughness by vent lurker, exile it instead of putting it into its owners graveyard.

This feels pretty big. Matzoth continues, and if people can't survive in one place, maybe them move around. Lets see some big transport sleds or caravans, and some interesting pack animal options to pull them
