Best booster box value for commander

Commander (EDH) forum

So I utilized tcgplayer’s buylist offer program to unload a good portion of my trade binder that was going nowhere and now I have store credit funds available. What in your guys/gals opinions is currently the best set to purchase a booster box to get commander upgrades/value from right now? I’m gonna go ahead and say that core set 2020 has really surprised me as of late with quality upgrades in my existing commander decks as well as the booster boxes setting around $85 shipped right now. I will also add that this will be my first booster box purchase ever and my wife and I are looking forward to it.

One more thing to add...this is going to sound really crazy and may contradict the whole purpose of a booster box, but I care more about play value in cards rather than monetary value. So sets with lottery cards are not a must in my book.

Buy singles. You can stretch that $100 for a box a LOT further. You'll use everything you buy and your decks will get a lot better than any single box could ever manage (unless you get one of those lottery cards you don't care about and get more than $100 out of it... and then buy singles).

I always thought that hour of Devastation was pretty pack full of good stuff for edh. But any of the modern masters are good for edh. But the best is battlebond. Battlebond is commander masters. Also the conspiracy sets are good too. There will be a new conspiracy and battlebond set coming in less than a year I'm sure so if you wait you'll get some good stuff

Buy singles dude!!! Might as well just go buy a couple cheap lottery tickets if you want to spin the luck wheel. Don't waste your money buying a booster box to build an edh deck. Think about it, for 200$ you can build a bunch of great complete edh decks by buying specific cards or you open an old booster box, get exactly 36 rares (90% of which won't help the deck) and go right back to buylisting your cards. What is the point of that cycle? I know it feels weird buying expensive single cards instead of opening dozens of packs hoping to find them, but its more efficient and affordable.

If you really, really have to buy a booster box then Battlebond for sure, as others have already suggested....Core 2020 is $85 shipped for a reason.

If you just wanted to greatly improve a Commander deck with that credit I'd just score a Mana Crypt ...even if it mean't spending a bit of cash too :D

Obviously, buying singles is the best way to get what you want. However if you are buying a box to start your collection, here is what I suggest.

My buddies and I have gotten some pretty good pulls from Iconic Masters, which I think is around $188 on TCGPlayer right now. It has some pretty good staples like Mana Drain , Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite and Consecrated Sphinx . As well as good uncommons and commons like Swords to Plowshares and Mind Stone .

If you're trying to keep it under $100, I've really liked all the Ravnica sets. All of these include the shock lands, which are always good to have. Guilds has stuff like Assassin's Trophy , Chromatic Lantern and Divine Visitation . Allegiance has Smothering Tithe and Incubation Druid . Return to Ravnica has Cyclonic Rift and Chromatic Lantern .

I would look at the different sets and see what cards interest you. Just remember that buying a box is a gamble, and you will very likely not get back the amount you put in.

I guess I should’ve added more info on my opening post so my apologies. I’ve always wanted to buy a booster box and I’m going to let this be my one time in doing that. I was asking about which to buy in the sense of which would benefit me the most edh wise..

The set that will benefit you the most really depends on what you're looking for in your new cards.

As far as price is concerned, check out this handy little graph. It will show you the cost versus the expected return of opening different sets that are still on the market.

As far as my personal recommendation, I bought a box of Masters 25 last year and absolutely loved it. It spans the whole gamut of Magic sets, and it will have a lot of playability in commander as well as other formats. I know you aren't looking for chase-rares in sets, but Masters 25 has some great rares/mythics and you'll probably pull a neat one if you get a box.

No matter what box you get though, I'd recommend inviting a few friends over to draft it as you open it! Its tons of fun and is one of the best reasons to get a booster imo.
